El día de hoy vengo a contarles un poco sobre mi historia personal viviendo con una discapacidad motora llamada Artrogriposis Multiple. Esta es mi primera publicación en esta comunidad y quiero aprovechar este primer artículo para que conozcas un poco de mi y contarte mi experiencia con un estilo de vida un poco distinto al de una persona normal resaltando las cosas que mas se me han complicado aprovechando la oportunidad por supuesto, de hacer catarsis.
Para comenzar, la Artrogriposis es el nombre que se le da a un grupo de afecciones músculo-esqueléticas inusuales que en términos generales causan rigidez en las extremidades o poco desarrollo muscular. La gravedad de la afección puede variar y puede afectar una o mas extremidades, las causas de esto pueden ser muy diversas y el tratamiento es terapias de estiramiento.
Today I come to tell you a little about my personal history living with a motor disability called Multiple Arthrosis. This is my first publication in this community and I want to take advantage of this first article so that you know a little about me and tell you about my experience with a lifestyle a little different from that of a normal person highlighting the things that have been most complicated for me by taking advantage of the opportunity, of course, to do catharsis.
To begin with, Arthrogryposis is the name given to a group of unusual musculoskeletal conditions that generally cause stiffness in the extremities or little muscle development. The severity of the condition can vary and can affect one or more limbs, the causes of this can be very diverse and the treatment is stretching therapies.
Todo comenzó en 2001, cuando mi mamá queda embarazada de su primer hijo a los 20 años de edad. Por supuesto la alegría del primer hijo debió ser algo innegable, sin embargo, las cosas no estuvieron tan fáciles para ella pues cuenta que cuando la condición con la que este bebe venía en camino fue detectada comenzó a vivir una situación muy exasperante debido a los constantes diagnósticos nada positivos que daban los médicos.
Múltiples extremidades, exageradas malformaciones como multiples cabezas, poca esperanza de vida, propuestas de aborto y experimentación científica con el cuerpo del bebe fueron solo uno de los pocos diagnósticos y propuestas que recibió de los médicos en aquel entonces. Por supuesto, debió ser una pesadilla pero ella decidió hacer caso omiso a todo eso y seguir adelante con el embarazo.
It all started in 2001, when my mother became pregnant with her first child at the age of 20. Of course the joy of the first child must have been something undeniable, however, things were not so easy for her because she says that when the condition with which this baby was on the way was detected she began to live a very exasperating situation due to the constant non-positive diagnoses that the doctors gave.
Multiple limbs, exaggerated malformations such as multiple heads, low life expectancy, abortion proposals and scientific experimentation with the baby's body were just one of the few diagnoses and proposals he received from doctors at that time. Of course, it must have been a nightmare but she decided to ignore all that and move forward with the pregnancy.
Mi abuelo al enterarse de todo lo que los médicos ya habían dicho del bebé decidió llevarse a mi mamá a una clínica privada con la esperanza de qué pudiera concluir el periodo de gestación allí y finalmente dar a luz. El tiempo transcurrió y el día de el parto poe cesárea llego, aquel 7 de Junio de 2001 pude ver la luz por primera vez aunque con las 4 extremidades afectadas por la Artrogriposis definitivamente mucho mejor de lo que pintaban los médicos.
Me considero sumamente afortunado a pesar de todo. Me cuentan que al momento de nacer mi cordón umbilical se encontraba enrollado en mi cuello tal como una boa en su presa, fue gracias a uno de mis delgados brazos que se atravesó que el cordon no me asfixio. Al momento de retirar el cordón mi brazo sufrió una ruptura debido a lo frágil que ya estaba por lo que se podría decir que nací con un yeso.
When my grandfather found out about everything the doctors had already said about the baby, he decided to take my mom to a private clinic in the hope that she could end the gestation period there and finally give birth. Time passed and the day of delivery by cesarean section arrived, that June 7, 2001 I was able to see the light for the first time although with the 4 limbs affected by arthrogryposis definitely much better than what the doctors painted.
I consider myself extremely fortunate in spite of everything. They tell me that at the time of birth my umbilical heart was wrapped around my neck like a boa in its prey, it was thanks to one of my thin arms that it went through that the cord did not suffocate me. At the time of removing the cord, my arm suffered a rupture due to how fragile it was already, so it could be said that I was born with a cast.
En mis primeros años de vida recibí varias operaciones con el objetivo de corregir algunas cosas de mi condición, sinceramente sólo recuerdo levemente la última de ellas que fue en la cadera y tenía como tres años de edad. Recuerdo tener un yeso de la cintura para abajo, Pero además de eso no hay mucha más información en mi cabeza. Crecí estudiando en un colegio normal, hacía actividades normales y lo único diferente era la terapia que ya mencioné que se me debía hacer para lograr reducir un poco la rigidez de mis articulaciones.
Además de la evidente condición motora con la que nací no hay ninguna otra afección de salud, por lo que a pesar de qué en apariencia puedo verme con poco músculo en brazos y piernas soy bastante resistente y puedo realizar movimientos a mi manera sin que me duela o sin riesgo a fractura. Esto también es gracias a las terapias y a que desde temprana edad me involucré en natación lo que a pesar de todo eso que me desarrollara con un muy buen estado físico.
In my first years of life I received several operations with the aim of correcting some things of my condition, honestly I only remember slightly the last of them that was on the hip and I was about three years old. I remember having a cast from the waist down, but on top of that there isn't much more information in my head. I grew up studying in a normal school, I did normal activities and the only thing different was the therapy that I already mentioned that should be done in order to reduce the stiffness of my joints a little.
In addition to the obvious motor condition with which I was born, there is no other health condition, so despite the fact that in appearance I can see myself with little muscle in my arms and legs, I am quite resistant and I can perform movements in my own way without hurting or without risk of fracture. This is also thanks to the therapies and to the fact that from an early age I got involved in swimming which despite all that I developed with a very good physical condition.
A nivel social, siempre he podido relacionarme con las personas fácilmente. Por fortuna nunca fui víctima de bullying o situaciones parecidas, de hecho cada lugar que voy siempre la gente está dispuesta a ayudarme y el trato que recibo es bueno. Las principales implicaciones de mi condición en mi estilo de vida es la incapacidad de caminar y de utilizar mis manos correctamente, por lo que siempre debo contar con alguien que me ayude a movilizar mi silla y manipular la mayoría de las cosas.
Mientras crecía pude aprender a escribir y dibujar perfectamente con la boca permitiéndome así ser independiente en el ámbito académico. Debido a esta destreza logré migrar estas habilidades a la tecnología permitiéndome utilizar el teléfono y la computadora de la misma forma. Esta ha sido una de las habilidades más importantes que he logrado desarrollar en mi vida pues me ha permitido desempeñarme creativa y laboralmente al haber logrado aprender a programar y actualmente a diseñar digitalmente.
On a social level, I have always been able to relate to people easily. Fortunately, I was never a victim of bullying or similar situations, in fact every place I go people are always willing to help me and the treatment I receive is good. The main implications of my condition in my lifestyle is the inability to walk and use my hands correctly, so I must always have someone to help me move my chair and manipulate most things.
As I grew up, I was able to learn to write and draw perfectly with my mouth, thus allowing me to be independent in the academic field. Because of this skill I managed to migrate these skills to technology by using the phone and the computer in the same way. This has been one of the most important skills that I have managed to develop in my life because it has allowed me to perform creatively and professionally by having managed to learn to program and currently to design digitally.
Aunque he logrado aprender a vivir con esta condición que me tocó te mentiría si te dijera que no hay momentos en los que puede afectarme, día a día trato de ser lo más independiente posible, sin embargo, me desanima muchísimo cuando llego a las barreras que aún no he podido superar en mi vida cotiniana.
Aún así siguen habiendo momentos donde me siento excesivamente frustrado por no poder tener toda la libertad que quisiera. Sin embargo, siempre es importante mantener actitud positiva, pues siempre es mejor afrontar los problemas con una sonrisa y buena actitud.
Although I have managed to learn to live with this condition that touched me, I would lie to you if I told you that there are no moments when it can affect me, day by day I try to be as independent as possible, however, it discourages me a lot when I reach the barriers that I have not yet been able to overcome in my everyday life.
Even so, there are still times when I feel excessively frustrated for not being able to have all the freedom I would like. However, it is always important to maintain a positive attitude, because it is always better to face problems with a smile and a good attitude.
En términos generales, mi experiencia viviendo con Artrogriposis ha sido buena y creo que quizás no sería quien soy hoy en día de no haber tenido este reto que no solo me tocó a mi, si no a mi mamá, mis hermanas y mis personas mas allegadas al tener que ayudarme cuando mas lo requiero y con quienes estoy sumamente agradecido. Espero con el tiempo seguir siendo capaz de hacer mucho mas por mi mismo y por ustedes que me han permitido desarrollarme hasta lograr llegar al punto actual.
In general terms, my experience living with Arthrosis has been good and I think that perhaps I would not be who I am today if I had not had this challenge that not only touched me, but my mother, my sisters and my closest people by having to help me when I need it most and to whom I am extremely grateful. I hope over time to continue to be able to do much more for myself and for you who have allowed me to develop until I reach the current point.
Actualmente soy atleta de natación, desarrollador de software, dibujante, escritor, y diseñador gráfico en proceso todo gracias a apoyo que he recibido a lo largo de mi vida. Mis deseos de ser más independientes van orientados a que esas personas que me han ayudado reciban de regreso todo lo que me han dado, quizás por eso todo frustrarme tanto al sentir que estoy en un punto muerto donde ya no hay progresos tan evidentes.
I am currently a swimming athlete, software developer, cartoonist, writer, and graphic designer in process all thanks to the support I have received throughout my life. My desires to be more independent are aimed at those people who have helped me receiving back everything they have given me, perhaps that's why I get so frustrated when I feel that I am in a stalemate where there is no longer such evident progress.
