It all started like any other day. I got up, made breakfast, got ready to go to the office, and left the house around 10:00 in the morning. But on my way down the stairs, I stepped wrong. At the orthopedist's office, the doctor touched my foot and bluntly said what I feared, “It looks like a fracture.” She sent me for X-rays and there they confirmed what I never wanted to hear: double fracture of the ankle. Even the radiologist, while looking at the images, told me that it was a case that would require surgery.
Cuando escuché esa palabra, cirugía, no pude contener las lágrimas. Era mi primera cirugía, y las preocupaciones comenzaron a invadirme, el procedimiento, el dolor, el tiempo de recuperación y, sobre todo, los costos.
When I heard that word, surgery, I could not hold back the tears. It was my first surgery, and worries began to invade me: the procedure, the pain, the recovery time and, above all, the costs.

I returned to the office with the X-rays, and the doctor confirmed my fears. There was no other option: I had to have surgery. A cast was placed to immobilize my foot, and I swear the pain was indescribable. I felt as if every movement was a reminder of my fragility.

That night was one of the longest nights of my life. I could not find a comfortable position to sleep, and the pain in my ankle was constant.

The next day, the preoperative preparations began: lab tests, a chest x-ray, an internist's evaluation and an electrocardiogram. All this to make sure I was fit to face the surgery.

Averiguamos en varias clínicas, y en una de ellas nos dieron un presupuesto de 2,400 dólares que incluye los materiales necesarios para mi recuperación, como un tornillo y una placa metálica. Mañana seguiremos buscando opciones más económicas, porque esa cifra es muy alta para nosotros.
Now, I have everything ready for the operation, except for one important detail: the costs. We inquired in several clinics, and in one of them they gave us a budget of 2,400 dollars that includes the necessary materials for my recovery, such as a screw and a metal plate. Tomorrow we will continue looking for more economical options, because that figure is too high for us.
Este proceso ha sido una verdadera prueba de resiliencia. De estar perfectamente bien hace unos días, mi vida cambió por completo en un instante. Sé que el camino será largo, pero confío en que saldré adelante.
