This is a thought I have had over time.
I know that the right thing, the good thing, would be for us to be inclined to be kind, considerate and empathetic to the people around us. That would be the ideal.
But there are people who go through events that damage us emotionally, or people who have always had problems to manage in a social context, for some reason or another.
What does this have to do with how we treat those around us?
Very much so.
Among those issues is a natural empathy for the feelings of others.
In my case, I spent a lot of time having trouble feeling emotions. Any kind of emotion, whether it was fear, sadness, anxiety, joy, love.... When I thought about my emotions there was only one thing: emptiness.
When you spend a lot of time like this, it's easy to forget that most of the people around you do feel things. For example, they may feel hurt by your words or actions.
What do I do to try to be kind to those around me, regardless of my circumstance at the time?
They are suffering too.
Tetric, yes, but true. Most of the people around me will spend most of their lives experiencing problems at different levels and in varying amounts, and some go through or will go through quite a bit of suffering. I probably can't do anything to change that, I will say.
But I can do something to not make it worse. I'm not writing from an optimistic or inordinately positive state of mind, obviously.
At best, I can barely brighten up a few minutes of someone's life until they remember everything they have to work out.
We do not know who the person is who is going through a bad time. Sometimes those who seem strong and cheerful, outgoing and in good standing may be hiding situations that are draining them. I can't know, but I can avoid being one more who sinks him or her into that pit.
I've found that sometimes the best way to show kindness and empathy is to be quiet. How many useless and imbecilic comments have you had that have put you down, even if just a little? There are some that bring us down. Well... If I have nothing good to say, I reserve my words.
Basically, my kindness strategy is to avoid making the situation worse. It's passive, I know. But sometimes less is more.
If we don't feel in a position to emotionally support those around us, say constructive words to them that build them up, or help in practical ways to our fellow man.... It is valid. Let's just not do the opposite, then.
One of the phases of immaturity we go through in life is that of:
"I don't care what they say."
Ooh.... But we do care. Maybe we care very little, of course, but the moment we are in a bad way, the memory of that gesture or that phrase hits us a little harder. It affects us, it affects us in some way.
I believe that human beings are not made to be immune to what surrounds us. No matter how neutral or logical we may be or try to be.
Anyway.... I'm going to try to be nice, or at least be polite. A sad smile is better than no smile at all. It's an improvement.

Este es un planteamiento que me he hecho a lo largo del tiempo.
Sé que lo adecuado, lo bueno, sería que nos sintiéramos inclinados a ser bondadosos, considerados y empáticos con la gente que nos rodea. Eso sería lo ideal.
Pero hay personas que pasamos por sucesos que nos dañan emocionalmente, o personas que han tenido problemas para manejarse en un contexto social desde siempre, por alguna u otra causa.
¿Qué tiene que ver esto con el trato que le damos a quienes nos rodean?
Muchísimo.
Por experiencia propia y debido a toda la información que leído al respecto de parte de especialistas en el tema, cuando afrontamos situaciones traumáticas (y no, no necesariamente, me refiero a una violación sexual), o profundamente dolorosas, o cuando pasamos por una depresión muy fuerte, puede que experimentemos una inmensa apatía hacia muchos asuntos que antes eran importantes para nosotros.
Entre esos asuntos está la empatía natural hacia los sentimientos de los demás.
En mi caso, pasé mucho tiempo con problemas para sentir emociones. Cualquier tipo de emoción, ya fuera miedo, tristeza, ansiedad, alegría, amor... Cuando pensaba en mis emociones solo había una cosa: vacío.
Cuando pasas mucho tiempo así, es fácil que se te olvide que la mayoría de la gente que te rodea sí que siente cosas. Por ejemplo, se pueden sentir heridos con tus palabras o acciones.
¿Qué hago para intentar ser amable con quiénes me rodean, independientemente de mi circunstancia en ese momento?
Ellos también están sufriendo.
Tétrico, sí, pero cierto. La mayoría de las personas que me rodean pasarán la mayor parte de su vida experimentado problemas a distintos niveles y en distintas cantidades, y algunos pasan o pasarán por bastante sufrimiento. Probablemente no puedo hacer nada para cambiarlo, diré.
Pero sí que puedo hacer algo para no empeorarlo. No escribo desde un estado mental optimista o desmesuradamente positivo, es obvio.
En el mejor de los casos, podré alegrar escasamente unos minutos de la vida de alguien hasta que se acuerde de todo lo que tiene por resolver.
No sabemos quién es la persona que está pasando por un mal momento. A veces, quienes parecen fuertes y alegres, extrovertidos y en buena posición, pueden estar escondiendo situaciones que los agotan. No lo puedo saber, pero sí que puedo evitar ser uno más que lo hunda en ese pozo.
He descubierto que, a veces, la mejor manera de demostrar amabilidad y empatía es callar. ¿Cuántos comentarios inútiles e imbéciles te han hecho que te han desanimado, así sea un poco? Hay unos que nos derrumban. Pues... Si no tengo nada bueno que decir, me reservo mis palabras.
Básicamente, mi estrategia de amabilidad es evitar empeorar la situación. Es pasivo, lo sé. Pero a veces menos es más.
Si no nos sentimos en condiciones para apoyar emocionalmente a quienes nos rodean, decirles palabras constructivas que los edifiquen, o ayudar de maneras prácticas a nuestro prójimo... Es válido. Solo no hagamos lo contrario, entonces.
Una de las fases de inmadurez por la que pasamos en la vida es la de:
"No me importa lo que digan".
Ooh... Pero sí que nos importa. Quizá nos importe muy poco, claro, pero en el momento en que estemos mal, el recuerdo de ese gesto o de esa frase nos golpea un poco más fuerte. Nos afecta, en algo nos afecta.
Creo que los seres humanos no estamos hechos para ser inmunes a lo que nos rodea. Por más que seamos o intentemos ser neutrales o lógicos.
En fin... Voy a intentar ser amable, o al menos, ser cortéz. Una sonrisa triste es mejor que ninguna sonrisa. Es un avance.
