There are some things I know how to do that still surprise me sometimes. I didn’t go to any school for them, nobody sat me down to teach me, yet I do them comfortably and even better than some people who actually trained for it. It just feels like some gifts were placed in me without me asking, and I’ve come to appreciate them more as I grow.
One of the first things I discovered I could do was plaiting hair. I didn’t learn it in any salon or training center. I just watched people around me, and one day I picked a comb and started practicing. It started with small lines and simple weaving. The more I tried, the better I became. Now I can do different styles, cornrows, twisting, all-back, and even some creative children’s styles. It just flows naturally when I’m doing hair, and people always end up satisfied. It’s one of the skills I’m most proud of.
Another one is cooking. I didn’t go to any catering school, but I’ve always loved being in the kitchen. I watch, try, taste, and learn as I go. I can prepare different kinds of dishes, local and simple continental ones too. From soups to rice varieties, snacks and even small chops, I handle them with ease. The funny thing is, people think I’ve been trained because of how tasty my food comes out, but everything I know was self-taught and practiced with love.
I also enjoy dancing. I don’t mean rehearsed dancing or stage choreography. I mean real, natural dancing that comes from inside. The moment music plays, I just flow with the rhythm. I’ve never been to a dance class, but I dance from my heart. Whether it’s cultural, Afrobeat, slow songs, or highlife, I just connect with the music and move. People often admire how I dance and think I’ve trained for it, but it’s just something I’ve always been able to do.
Now, when it comes to electricals, I won’t say I know too much, but I do understand small basic things. If something like a fan or iron stops working, I can check it, figure out if it’s something simple, and sometimes fix it. I like trying to understand how things work. I may not be an expert or an electrician, but I’m not completely clueless either. I know enough to help myself when needed, and that’s a big plus for me.
One last thing I’m happy about is the way I taught myself how to use a laptop. I didn’t attend any computer training or ICT program. I just started pressing, making mistakes, and learning bit by bit. Now, I can type well, navigate different tools and apps, and even fix some small settings issues. The confidence I have with using a laptop now all came from my own curiosity and willingness to try.

Sometimes, I sit back and reflect on all these things, and I’m just thankful. These gifts didn’t cost me money to learn, but they’ve opened doors for me in different ways. I believe everyone has something special they’re naturally good at. The only way to discover it is to try new things and pay attention to what your hands enjoy doing.
So if you’re still trying to figure out what you’re good at, don’t worry. Just keep exploring, you might just be sitting on a gift you never knew you had.
