Hello everyone welcome to my Blog. One of the times in my life I have ever felt so excited was yesterday, it was an exciting day for me and my colleague as we went out for our health practicum.
As Health Education students we were sent to a primary health centre in my town to go and learn how to educate especially the pregnant women during their antenatal visit to the health centre. And to say it was beneficiary to me as I had learnt a lot of things in the process ranging from how to effectively educate the masses. The topic for the health Education was malaria in pregnancy, it's signs, symptoms, what causes malaria and how a pregnant woman can prevent malaria. I learnt that when a pregnant woman is affected by malaria, it causes weakness for her and the foetus and also it stops the growth of the foetus thereby shrinking the foetus in her uterus. One thing that amazed me was knowing that malaria can cause miscarriage for pregnant women.
So after bringing them to this awareness the nurse kept emphasizing on the need for pregnant women to visit the hospital whenever they feel sick so they can be properly examined by appropriate testing to discover the cause of the problem and know how to properly treat the problem.
Furthermore, she lastly emphasized on the pregnant women feeding well and in the right proportion. Over the years I have grown up with the mentality that a pregnant woman should avoid eating certain food like egg, beans, bread as it increases the weight of the baby. But yesterday the nurse said research shows that a pregnant woman should eat everything but in the right proportion she went ahead to advise that every pregnant woman should eat egg once everyday that it is healthy. I am yet to make a research on this but these were the few things I actually learnt and it was actually a very exciting session with the pregnant women.
My Team and I will be going back again next week and this time we will be the ones educating the pregnant women on the signs of Labour, breastfeeding and what Jaundice entails. Hoping to bring you update again.
