I choose to call it lackadaisical attitude on the part of the government especially relating to education in my country. Somehow, these people are taking the lives of Nigerian citizens as a joke. There is a board called the joint admission and matriculation board (Jamb) whose duty is to conduct entrance exams to prove a student's fitness to move on to the next level from High School to the university.
Something happened recently during the 2025 jamb examination, these students were giving their allocated centers to write the exams. One of the first issues that came up is the fact that they posted students to jamb centers that are far away from their homes despite the insecurity and dangerous activities going on in the country. They also slated a national exam for 6:30 a.m. so early in the morning that it was difficult for students to locate their r centers.
There was a bad news about a high school student who sat for the jamb exam the second time but unfortunately she scored below the expected average. She took matters into her own hands because she was frustrated and decided to commit suicide. It was a sad day on the internet because people had different opinions about the whole thing, some where like this was not enough reason for a person to take their own life, others blamed the Nigerian government for not been credible enough and providing infrastructure that would bring about credibility and transparency.
Poor infrastructure is one of the major issues in every sector in Nigeria ranging from Healthcare, security, education, and so on. The greed and selfishness of political leaders have eaten deep that they do not care what goes on in the lives of the people. When the issue of the girl who committed suicide was trending on all social media platforms, the chairman of the education board came out to the press to Claim that they made a mistake because of a glitch in their system. Hence, the poor girl is a victim of the lackadaisical attitude from the government.
People are not taking these acts likely as the board is facing multiple court petitions from parents whose wards were affected. Like I mentioned, the issue of poor Infrastructure concerns certain areas that have to do with insufficient examination centers as there are limited centers built by the government, something that should be readily available. Again when some of these students go to the exam hall that is computer based test, they experienced unreliable internet connectivity, or system failures, slow response times, or power outages. Hence, they do not have the opportunity to complete their test and nothing has been done about it.
Finally, there are many issues to be addressed to ensure credibility and fairness, some of them include :Audit and Standardization of Centers, upgraded facilities, less crowded exam centers, allow for feedback and constructive criticism as this would help to find out fault and employ a repair mechanism.
