I have noticed that when we compare parenting of the 80s to what we have currently, they're at the same level because the kind of parenting done in those days matched perfectly with the situation of the world as it was in those days, while the kind of parenting these days aligns very well with how the world is currently. This may appear to be a not-so-reasonable comparison, but that is the truth as I feel about the two patterns of parenting.
In the 80s, parenting was not left solely to the parents of a child, every single person could caution, correct, and even go as far as beating a child when the child did wrong. And after this, the parents would not see anything wrong with it; rather, they would thank the people who made the effort to correct the child.
In those days, beating was one of the major methods used to correct a child, and it was never seen as a crime by the law when a parent beat their child. The school also wasn't left out, in fact, beating was the main method used to correct students, and parents were never angry that a teacher beat their children with a cane.
During those days, the world in Africa or Nigeria was not as it is at this current stage. There weren't so many troubles and controversies related to raising a child. Beating a child was seen as a normal thing, and more interestingly, the beatings helped children a lot in shunning bad acts and accepting corrections. The beatings weren’t seen as something that could injure or kill a child; it was just a normal practice, and everyone was okay with it. In a nutshell, in those days, the world was peaceful, especially in terms of insecurity.
But in this modern age, things have really changed. Nigerians and Africa at large have completely adopted the white man's culture, where children don’t get beaten because it’s considered a violation of human rights, and because they might get injured or even faint in the process. That is to say, it may affect their health.
The thing is, our parents in the 80s weren’t exposed to those laws, so they didn’t see their actions as being against human rights. So, you see why I said that both systems are balanced? As long as the world was okay and didn’t see anything wrong in most of their methods of training children, it wasn’t a big deal. Now, in this age where people are aware that beating a child(especially in school) is against human rights, people don’t do it, and if they do, it is considered a crime.

Comparing the two as to which one is better, I would choose the days of the 80s, because from what we’ve seen and are seeing, those people had more caution and better manners than what we have today. Although, I can’t blame this age’s system too, because that’s how the world is now, and we can’t help it.
