One thing I never actually learned in any formal way but can conveniently do is dancing.
It’s funny when I think about it because I’ve never taken a dance class in my life. I’ve never had a teacher show me how to move or tell me the right way to step. Yet, for some reason, dancing just comes naturally to me. It’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing without needing any sort of training. In fact, I genuinely believe it’s a gift—one I didn’t even realize I had until secondary school.
Back in those school days, one of the highlights for me was the social nights. While some students would see it as just another boring school activity, I always looked forward to it. It was literally the one time I could freely express myself through dance. That moment when the lights go off, the DJ starts spinning those fast-paced tracks, and the whole hall starts moving to the beat—that’s when I truly come alive. I didn’t need anyone to push me to the dance floor. I was always ready. I normally enjoy vibing to those songs with fast beats because they make me dance even with more energy.
Honestly, i wouldn’t call myself a professional dancer or anything close to that. I mean, I’m not out here doing backflips or complex choreographies. But give me a song with a solid beat, and I’ll give you vibes. That’s the kind of dancer I am. The kind that dances with passion and rhythm—not necessarily perfection.
There was one particular experience I’ll never forget. It happened during the commencement of my JUPEB program. We had this dinner night, and part of the event was a dance competition. I wasn’t planning to dance at all that evening—I actually just came to chill and enjoy myself. But you know how friends can be mischievous. My guys told me the winner of the dance competition was going to get 10,000 naira. The moment I heard that, I jumped into the competition without even thinking twice. I danced like my life depended on it. I was sweating, smiling, and hitting every move with energy. People were even cheering at one point. I felt like a celebrity on stage.
At the end of the night, I didn’t win, but then I came second—which still felt like a win to me. The funniest part? It turned out the whole 10k prize thing was just a prank my friends made up to get me on stage. I was shocked, but i couldn’t even get mad. I just laughed it off because I indeed had the time of my life, and that moment still lives rent-free in my head.
In the end, dancing is just something I enjoy, but I’ve realized it’s something I can do without even trying too hard.
