Being a student in a schools surrounded by politically minded people, I sought growth by having connections within and outside my school.
I believe in the fact that a person's key to success is majorly dependent on the people that have him or her upstairs.
Irrespective of the fact that I am an antisocial type, the fact that this belief was stamped on my heart, made me go out of my way, just to get more friends who are in higher places.
When I was still a student, I tried to make everyone my friend.
Including the ones my spirit did not match with. I was humble and loyal I both the high and low, with one goal in mind. Not a manipulative type, but I will say that I am a type that understood how the matrix works and was trying to dance to its tune.
Gradually, I began to get loved by the lecturers and the principal (also called HOD in other universities). I was made the leader of my class, even though I had a small stature.
For a moment, it felt like my plans to befriend everyone was going just fine and I had no problems. Well, not until they changed our principal. I was not bothered about this because I thought I will use my charms to make the next principal like me but it was not as easy as I thought.
The new principal came in and we the students welcomed her with joy.
We were really happy to have her among us.
She resumed her duty, and I went to her office some days later to personally congratulate her. This was my first step to making her like me.
I went to her with flattering words, and a huge congratulations. We vibed, she asked me some questions which I happily answered.
My first step was a success. So I thought. Continuing the next phase with humility and trying to assist her with some office works (I do this with the previous principal), I faced a huge rejection. Though my intentions were pure, she was a type of person that trusted no body. Not even her lecturers.
I tried everything possible to break her defense and get her to like me, but all my efforts was in vain.
After a month or two of trying to get her like me, and meeting rejections, I decided to re-strategize.
She started liking me when she noticed that I was academically sound. I got hold of this opportunity and utilized it to the fullest. Gradually, she began to allow me do some things for her, some times she even complain to me about some school issues which I try as much as possible to provide the little solution I can give. I am somewhat experienced in that field, so I know how to handle school matters.
I thought everything was becoming better, until three of my coursemates poured sand in my fruit juice.
They went to her office to accuse me of lavishing the money I gave to them. They accused me of many things and demanded that I step.down from being the leader.
Obviously, the class was against this, and they defended me. I gave the entire class a proper account that my assistant failed to give, and the three people were left in shame.
This made the principal had double thoughts about me, and our closeness began to fade. I tried again and again to make her like me but then, as the saying goes - when trust is shattered, it is slightly impossible to rebuild.
Well, this did not made me continue to do what I can do to assist the office.
My final exams came and I wrote it. I passed with flying colors and I was out of the school.
About 2 or 3 months after graduating, I received news that she has been fired because she was embezzling student funds.
They went further to say that even punch news of Nigeria broadcasted the news in their newspaper.
I was shocked when I heard this because I know her to a good extent. I can say that she will not do such thing. But then, humans are always humans. Change is constant.
Well, I did not get her trust back, but I am happy, knowing that the problem is not from me.
This is my entry to the hive naija prompt.
