I had to think so well to remember some silly, funny and childish things I did back then: I could only recall few, I guess I wasn't a childish child.
As you know it that superstitions are common among children, I remember one of the few ones I know of then. This particular one is common among the Yoruba people of Nigeria (Western Part) and more common among younger children between age 5-12.
It is like a charm you do to escape a punish for an offense. It was told that you pluck out 3 out of your eyesashes, say the person name of who you offended and say they should forget your offense, then, put them on or inside the footwear of that person you have offended and they would forget your offense.
Of course, where would I hear such if not from a very cunny friend of mine those days. I doubted when you told me about it but a boy that was listening to our conversation testified that it had worked for him before. I was convinced that it was true.
That same week, I did something that annoyed my dad and he promised to punish me when he's back from work ( he was about to leave for work and was getting late so he postponed the punishment to my offense). I was scared, then I remembered what my friend told me. Hastily, I ran to the doorstep, plucked out 3 of my eyelashes, said "daddy, forget what I just did that got you angry" then, I kept the eyelashes inside my dad's sandals and believed that it had worked.
As I expected, my dad wore those sandals to work. He got back from work and went straight to his room, changed his clothes and began to eat his dinner. He left for his room after eating and I was super exicted that he had forgotten my offense. But, this man did not! He called me to his room, told me to kneel down, raise my hands into the air. I was so pained and disappointed that what my friend told me didn't work.
I can't recall exactly what the offense was but it happened in my primary school, Kesna College was the name. I was in the proprietor's office with two other boys who were also my classmate. From the outward appearance of the proprietor, as I recalled, I could tell the offense was a serious one; the first person he flogged with his special cane wasn't lucky at all. I and the other boy waiting for our turn were so scared because of how hot and brutal it was.
The boy that was being flogged struggled to remove his hand from the proprietor's grip and ran to the widow, jumped through it and ran out of the school premises. My God!!! I was shocked but that wasn't all, the other boy that was standing beside me followed, he jumped through the window and left school. At that moment, I was so confused ans shocked, like how!!
I stood and couldn't do same thing because I feared that they would be severely punished the next day when they show up in school ( maybe with their parents too ). So, the proprietor dealt with me as if I was the one that summoned those boys to jump through the window.
Next day, could you believe that those kids were not punished at all. I felt so bad and wished I had done the same thing ( unlike those boys, I was not that rugged like them to have jumped the window then😂 )
I have done some brave and comendable things too when I was younger.
My mom fell sick and didn't want to stay in the hospital, so she received treatment at home. On this particular day, I was the only one with her , she complained of stomach ache and all I could say was "sorry mummy". Some minutes after that, she rushed to the bathroom and was throwing up loudly, I entered the batbroom when she didn't stop. I took the bowl there and took some water, poured it on her face, washed off some of the vomit off her mouth and repeated it till she was okay. As a kid, I was supposed to be irritated by what I saw but I wasn't because I was more focused on heloing my mom than what I was seeing.
Actually, I did same thing I had seen her do to me whenever I threw up. She only said thank you but that was not all. She told my dad and my siblings about it when they got back and that was when she expressed how shocked and happy she was at my action. Funny thing, I started feeling irritated after she told them😂😂 so they gave me a candy to lick.
Besides, this is my first time writing in the @hivenaija community.
