Vocational skills are something everyone must have, not talking about the financial aspect now, but having a skill that even when not used as a source of income, can be used in the future. We are in a digital age where people think they don't need to acquire any skills and can get white collar jobs or earn from social media giving us lots of nuisances in the social world. Many forget that no knowledge is a waste, even when it seems not useful presently, there will always be a need for it later.
Growing up, there were a few skills I would have learned, but due to my childish behavior, I neglected some, such as crocheting. Then my grandma was very good at it but I paid no attention to it because I thought it was oldies stuff and not for my kind of age. After I missed that opportunity of learning crocheting, tailoring is what I would have learnt but then I felt it was too stressful for me. I've seen instances where a tailoring boss would use scissors or a taperule to beat their apprentices and use foul language to speak to them. That alone discouraged me but now I'm regretting that decision. I would have learnt it either way, and even if I'm not using it as a profession, I can easily sew clothes for myself.
If there is any skill I have learnt without going through formal training it's hairdressing. Growing up at a teenage level, I always helped my mom to lose her hair. Then she encouraged me to use her hair to practice. Gradually, I started with a single braid, and as time went on, I learned how to weave. Gradually, I started making hair, although not so professionally. This is what I found interesting to do, now I can conveniently plait hair, although not all styles, but simple ones. This is a skill I had no formal training in; I just started like a play, then it turned into something reasonable. I'm not a professional hair stylist, but I'm happy with the little I know. It's something I would love to learn more about if I have the chance and time.
Hairdressing is a beautiful skill a lady should possess. My hairstylist always does a good job for me, and I love how people comment on my hair whenever I make a new hairstyle. It's a beautiful thing that adds beauty to a woman. Sometimes when our stylist isn't available, I help my baby sister make her hair for the week. This wouldn't have been possible if I hadn't developed myself and dedicated myself to knowing it. I know the knowledge I've acquired about making hair can't be taken away from me and that's what matters the most.
