Most of us did ridiculous things as kids. Things that we look back on and laugh at. Things that make us ask ourselves, "what was I thinking?".
Some of us also did things that were so spectacular for people of our age. Things that made people marvel.
Well, I am one of such people, and I'm going to share my story.
One funny, childish thing I did as a kid was playing with sand.
As a child, I would make sand cakes. I did this with my siblings and my cousins. We would mix the sand with water and put it in a container. After a while, we would carefully bring out the already caked sand which has taken the shape of the container.
We would also design the sand cake with virtually anything depending on our inspiration at that moment.
Playing with the sand was always fun back then. Now that I look back at it, I wonder how we derived fun from that.
Back then, I didn't have much to do with my time, so I would spend so much time playing with the sand.
Another thing I did was play in the rain.
My parents never approved of it. They felt it wasn't good for me to do that, as I stood the risk of catching a cold.
However, when it rained and my parents were not around, I would go out and play in the rain with my peers. I loved the thrill of the water splashing on me as I ran from one place to another in the rain. The fact that I was willing to disobey my parents just to play in the rain was unwise.
Sometimes, after playing in the rain, I would catch a cold, just like my parents feared. I would get sick and undergo treatment. That's why I usually get into trouble when they find out I played in the rain.
For me, the appeal was in doing something fun with my friends in the rain. Most times, we would play football as it rained, and we enjoyed it. Back then we would say to ourselves that football played in the rain is sweeter.
One more funny thing I did when I was very little was playing with soapy water.
I would put a lot of liquid soap in the water so that it foamed very much, and I would play with the bubbles.
I always finished the soap in the house because of that, and I got into trouble because of that. They had to hide the liquid soap in the house just to make sure I didn't see any to waste.
I look back at all these things I did when I was younger, and it looks ridiculous. I wonder how I derive joy from those things.
I see kids these days doing things that are funny and what comes to my mind is the fact that in some years to come, they will also look back, laughing and wondering why they did such things.
I won't deny the fact, however, that no matter how ridiculous these activities seem, they made my childhood.
