The first story in our Hive Vinyl Freaks community will be about my own publishing adventure, which resulted in a vinyl album: a rerelease of Cool Kids of Death's debut album under the same title.
About the Cool Kids of Death
Let me start with a brief profile of the CKOD band. They hail from the very musical city of Łódź. In the history of Polish culture, this city is famous not only for Poland's (and perhaps the world's) most important Film School, a graduate of which is, for example, Roman Polański. Łódz is known also for many extraordinary artists and bands. My personal favourites include Kobong and Mona Polaski, as well as the subject of this article – Cool Kids of Death.
The band is original, although to connoisseurs of British music, it may seem a bit derivative, due to many inspirations drawn from the Isles, including britpop and post-punk.
Incidentally, the band was formed by versatile artists, such as Krzysztof Ostrowski and Jacek Frąś, who were highly regarded and successful comic book creators. Kuba Wandachowicz was both a radio presenter and a philosopher. His 2002 op-ed titled "Generacja nic" (Generation Nothing), published in "Gazeta Wyborcza," caused quite a stir in the media and sparked a broad social discussion on the condition of 20-somethings at the beginning of the 21st century. The band members were born between 1976 and 1978, which, as it happens, is also the year I was born.
Perhaps this is a big part of why I identified so strongly with CKOD's debut and the songs on it, each of which was an anthem for our generation.
The Album "Cool Kids of Death" – The Music and the Message
Before I get to the specifics of the vinyl rerelease, I'd like to say a few more words about the album itself.
CKOD's debut is a britpop, post-punk, new-wave electronic masterpiece that, in its musical and lyrical layers, was an expression not so much of rebellion, but of sheer anger and a sense of powerlessness in the face of capitalist reality. It turned out that after the transformation in Poland, the "American dream" that was supposed to come after the fall of communism was not all it was cracked up to be, and many young people were simply left out in the cold. The aggressive capitalist reality and young Polish democracy were not a good tandem for young people, entering adulthood, to comfortably get ahead in life.

Although for me, every single track on the album made a huge impact on Polish music culture.
The Vinyl Release – The Story of a Unique Rerelease
Since this is a "Vinyl Freaks" group, I will now talk about the vinyl release, because that, in addition to the cult status of the band and the album, is an extra factor that adds to the uniqueness of this historic musical event.
In 2016, this album was released on vinyl. I don't remember exactly how it came about, but I had a conversation with Kamil Łazikowski from CKOD, probably thanks to a contact from another band from Łódź, Bruno Schulz. I'm not 100% sure. But I remember having a few conversations with Kamil and Krzysiek Ostrowski. We agreed that such a rerelease had to be special. And it was. First and foremost, Kamil had to dig up old computers, retrieve the drives from them, and buy old software online to decode the recordings and remaster them. Later, Kamil told me, when he finally heard how it sounded on vinyl, that the album finally sounded the way he had intended. In 2002 (Sissy Records / BMG Poland), there was such a push to release the material that they didn't really bother with the details. At that time, the band was becoming increasingly popular. Finally, we decided that the album would have two vinyl records: one black and one white. Initially, the album was divided into two parts: "HATE" and "LOVE." This gave us the idea that the "HATE" vinyl would be black, and "LOVE" white. We also added a 7-inch single, on which we included two previously unreleased tracks: "Kopia Kopii" (Copy of a Copy) and "Spotkam Cię" (I'll Meet You).
The Story of the Pressing, Anecdotes, and Details
There's also a historic anecdote connected to the 7-inch single. The record was pressed in a recently established Polish pressing plant (it was called GM Records then, and today it's XDisc). At that time, they didn't yet have the forms for pressing 7-inch records. That's why the test press of the single was pressed on a 12" record. Only for the final production did they have the proper form, and collectors received the 7-inch single. That 12" test press is still in my collection. It's also worth adding that this was the first 7-inch single pressed in Poland since the fall of the pressing plant in Pionki in the 90s. (For people outside of Poland, let me explain that this was a legendary Polish pressing plant that produced most Polish vinyl records at the time).
To top it all off, we added inner sleeves and a booklet with previously unpublished photos of the band. Krzysztof Ostrowski once again designed the iconic cover and adapted it for a vinyl release in a gatefold sleeve.
The Phenomenon of the Rerelease – Why is this Release So Special?
This release is held in high regard not only by vinyl collectors who love such stories but also by audiophiles. The InfoAudio portal gave our album 5/5 stars in some areas, which is no small feat. Especially considering that the source was digital from the start. CKOD's recordings were made at home, on a home computer and in a home studio. Despite this, we managed to achieve on vinyl (thanks to Kamil Łazikowski from Soyuz Studio) a very deep and dynamic sound, much more satisfying than the original CD release. And at the same time, we preserved the rawness and edge of these recordings.
The collectible value of this record is indisputable. It is very difficult to buy this album on the secondary market. It is highly sought after, but often the enthusiasm of prospective buyers is dampened by the prices. For example, today (12.08.2025) on Discogs, there is only one for sale at a price of 500 EUR.
I have in my collection both the regular album with number 358 – still in its shrink wrap – and the test press. Both copies are in perfect condition. I have wanted to sell them several times, but I set such high prices that no one interested came forward, and I – probably subconsciously – don't want to get rid of them at all.
This album was, above all, a publishing event in my life. In 2002, despite the huge hype surrounding CKOD, I didn't hold them in great affection, although they undoubtedly had a great impact on my musical journey. You know how it is, when something is great, but starts to be exploited beyond measure, it becomes exhausting. Are you still able to listen to Nirvana's "Nevermind" in one go? I'm not anymore :d
The debut of CKOD in its vinyl rerelease is, for me, first and foremost a tribute and a monument to that band and those times, when we were supposed to have an easier life, but it turned out that many of my friends shared the fate of "welcome, Pole, to the kitchen sink" whether in the UK or Ireland. I also belonged to that group.
The publishing process began in 2015, when I was still living in the UK, and it was originally supposed to be pressed at the English pressing plant DMS, but in October 2015, I returned to Poland and started the whole process from scratch with a Polish pressing plant. The pressing was overseen by Adam Gałek, a legend of the revived Polish pressing plant, a man who loves vinyl no less than I do, and maybe – or even for sure – more than I do :D This album and its sound are also, to a large extent, his merit.

Pierwszą historią w naszej społeczności Hive Vinyl Freaks będzie moja własna przygoda wydawnicza, której owocem jest winylowy album, reedycja debiutanckiej płyty Cool Kids of Death pod tym samym tytułem.
O zespole Cool Kids of Death
Zacznę może od krótkiej charakterystyki zespołu CKOD. Pochodzi on z bardzo muzycznego miasta Łodzi. W historii polskiej kultury to miasto zasłynęło nie tylko najważniejszą w Polsce (a może i na świecie) Szkołą Filmową, którą ukończył m.in. Roman Polański, ale też wieloma niezwykłymi artystami i zespołami. Do moich ulubionych należą Kobong i Mona Polaski, a także bohater tego artykułu – Cool Kids of Death.
Zespół jest oryginalny, choć znawcom brytyjskiej muzyki może wydawać się trochę wtórny, ze względu na wiele inspiracji zaczerpniętych z Wysp, brit popu oraz post punka.
Przy okazji, zespół tworzyli wszechstronni artyści, tacy jak Krzysztof Ostrowski i Jacek Frąś, którzy byli cenionymi i odnoszącymi sukcesy twórcami komiksów. Kuba Wandachowicz był zarówno radiowcem, jak i filozofem. Jego felieton z 2002 roku pod tytułem „Generacja nic”, który ukazał się w „Gazecie Wyborczej”, narobił sporo szumu w mediach i wzbudził szeroką dyskusję społeczną na temat kondycji 20-latków na początku XXI wieku. Członkowie zespołu urodzeni są między 1976 a 1978 rokiem, co, tak się składa, jest też rokiem mojego urodzenia.
Może dlatego w dużej mierze identyfikowałem się z debiutem CKOD i zapisanymi na nim piosenkami, z których każda była hymnem naszego pokolenia.
Album „Cool Kids of Death” – muzyka i przekaz
Zanim przejdę do specyfiki reedycji debiutu na winylu, może jeszcze kilka słów o samym albumie.
Debiut CKOD to britpopowe, postpunkowe, nowofalowo-elektroniczne dzieło, które w warstwie muzycznej i tekstowej było wyrazem nie tyle buntu, co wkurwu i poczucia bezsilności wobec kapitalistycznej rzeczywistości. Okazało się, że po transformacji systemowej w Polsce „american dream”, który miał przyjść po upadku komuny, wcale nie był taki wspaniały i wielu młodych ludzi było po prostu z niego wykluczonych. Kapitalistyczna, agresywna rzeczywistość i młoda polska demokracja nie były dobrym tandemem, na którym młodzi ludzie, wchodzący w dorosłość mogli wygodnie pojechać.

Wydanie winylowe – historia unikatowej reedycji
Ponieważ jest to grupa „Vinyl Freaks”, to przejdę do wydania winylowego, bo właśnie – poza kultowością zespołu i tego albumu – jest ono dodatkowym czynnikiem dodającym wyjątkowości temu historycznemu wydarzeniu muzycznemu.
W 2016 roku doszło do wydania tego albumu na płycie winylowej. Nie pamiętam dokładnie, jak do tego doszło, ale przeprowadziłem rozmowę z Kamilem Łazikowskim z CKOD, chyba dzięki kontaktowi od innego łódzkiego zespołu – Bruno Schulz. Na 100% nie jestem pewien. Ale pamiętam, że przeprowadziliśmy kilka rozmów z Kamilem i Krzyśkiem Ostrowskim. Ustaliliśmy, że taka reedycja musi być wyjątkowa. I taka też była. Przede wszystkim, Kamil musiał odkopać stare komputery, wyciągnąć z nich dyski, przez internet kupił stare oprogramowanie, żeby odkodować nagrania i je zremasterować. Potem Kamil mi powiedział, gdy już usłyszał, jak to brzmi na winylu, że w końcu ten album brzmi tak, jak on chciał. W 2002 roku (Sissy Records / BMG Poland) było takie ciśnienie na wydanie tego materiału, że nie bardzo przejmowano się detalami. W tym czasie zespół stawał się coraz bardziej popularny. W końcu ustaliliśmy, że album będzie miał dwa winyle: czarny i biały. Pierwotnie płyta była podzielona na dwie części: „HATE” i „LOVE”. To podsunęło nam pomysł, żeby winyl „HATE” był czarny, a „LOVE” biały. Do tego dodaliśmy jeszcze singiel 7-calowy, na którym umieściliśmy dwa wcześniej niepublikowane utwory: „Kopia Kopii” i „Spotkam Cię”.
Historia tłoczenia, anegdoty i detale
Z singlem 7-calowym wiąże się też pewna historyczna anegdota. Płytę tłoczyliśmy w niedawno powstałej polskiej tłoczni (nazywała się GM Records, a dziś to XDisc). W tamtym czasie nie mieli jeszcze form do tłoczenia 7 cali. Dlatego test press singla został wytłoczony w płycie 12”. Dopiero przy produkcji finalnej była właściwa forma i do kolekcjonerów trafił już singiel 7-calowy. A ten 12” test press jest ciągle w mojej kolekcji. Trzeba też dodać, że to pierwszy 7-calowy singiel wytłoczony w Polsce od czasu upadku tłoczni w Pionkach w latach 90. (dla osób spoza Polski wyjaśniam, że to kultowa polska tłocznia, która produkowała większość polskich winyli w tamtym czasie).
Do tego dodaliśmy wewnętrzne koperty i książeczkę z wcześniej niepublikowanymi zdjęciami zespołu. Krzysztof Ostrowski jeszcze raz zaprojektował kultową okładkę i przystosował ją do wydania winylowego w okładce gatefold.
Fenomen reedycji – dlaczego to wydawnictwo jest tak wyjątkowe?
To wydawnictwo jest uznane nie tylko przez kolekcjonerów winyli, którzy kochają takie historie, ale też przez audiofilów. Portal InfoAudio dał naszej płycie 5/5 gwiazdek w kilku segemtnach, co jest nie lada osiągnięciem. Szczególnie biorąc pod uwagę, że od początku źródło było cyfrowe. Nagrań CKOD dokonał w domu, na domowym komputerze i w domowym studio. Mimo to, na winylu udało się nam osiągnąć (to zasługa Kamila Łazikowskiego z Soyuz Studio) bardzo głębokie i dynamiczne brzmienie, dużo bardziej satysfakcjonujące niż oryginalne wydanie na CD. A przy tym zachowaliśmy surowość i pazur tych nagrań.
Wymiar kolekcjonerski tej płyty jest nie do podważenia. Bardzo ciężko kupić tę płytę na rynku wtórnym. Jest ona bardzo poszukiwana, ale często zapał chętnych jest ostudzany przez ceny. Na przykład dziś (12.08.2025) na Discogs jest tylko jedna na sprzedaż w cenie 500 EUR.
Ja mam w kolekcji zarówno regularny album z numerem 358 – ciągle w folii, oraz test press. Oba egzemplarze w doskonałej formie. Kilkakrotnie chciałem je sprzedać, jednak dawałem tak wysokie ceny, że nikt chętny się nie znalazł, a ja – chyba podświadomie – nie chcę wcale się ich pozbyć.
Ten album był w moim życiu przede wszystkim wydarzeniem wydawniczym. W 2002 roku, pomimo wielkiego hype’u na CKOD, nie darzyłem ich wielką sympatią, choć bez wątpienia mieli duży wpływ na moją muzyczną przygodę. Wiecie, jak to jest, kiedy coś jest super, ale zaczyna być eksploatowane ponad miarę, zaczyna to być męczące. Czy jesteście jeszcze w stanie przesłuchać „Nevermind” Nirvany jednym ciągiem? Ja już nie :d
Debiut CKOD w winylowej reedycji to dla mnie przede wszystkim hołd i pomnik tamtej kapeli i tamtych czasów, w których miało nam się żyć łatwiej, a okazało się, że wielu moich przyjaciół podzieliło los „witaj Polaku na zmywaku” czy to w UK, lub w Irlandii. Ja również zaliczałem się do tego grona.
Proces wydawniczy zaczął się w roku 2015, gdy jeszcze mieszkałem w UK i pierwotnie miało to być tłoczone w angielskiej tłoczni DMS, ale w październiku 2015 wróciłem do Polski i cały proces zacząłem od początku z polską tłocznią. Nad tłoczeniem czuwał Adam Gałek, legenda odrodzonej polskiej tłoczni, człowiek, który kocha winyle nie mniej ode mnie, a może – a nawet na pewno – bardziej ode mnie :D Ten album i jego brzmienie to w dużej mierze też jego zasługa.
