Manipulating people has been used over and over for who knows how many centuries or millennia... perhaps this all started shortly after first domesticating wheat. It must have changed the road we were on enormously. Imagine, a tribe you come in contact with has a store of food because they've figured out how to grow food and raise animals... no more hunting and gathering needed. The tribe in question needs to build "security" around their food storage, and we begin to see a different kind of human on human violence. That's not to say there wasn't violence before, I'm sure there was, but it probably wasn't over personal property.
Anyhow, the method used to make people support terrible things is an old (and well oiled) technology. There's a quote by one of my favorite anarchists, Etienne de la Boétie, that can really make you think about how we can so easily be manipulated:
(Governments)"They never undertake an unjust policy, even one of some importance, without prefacing it with some pretty speech concerning public welfare and common good."
source: The Politics of Obedience: The Discourse of Voluntary Servitude
This kind of speech is given all the time, but the important thing to remember here is that, the story is always told in such way that the people voluntarily decide to support this "unjust policy". If you can see that, you're able to separate yourself from the mob mentality, and escape the mental manipulation.
Have a good read at what is said here in a conversation between Hermann Göring and Gustave Gilbert, read it over a couple of times, to let it really sink in properly:
Göring: Why, of course, the people don't want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship.
Gilbert: There is one difference. In a democracy, the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars.
Göring: Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.
source: The Nuremberg Diary
Wow, just wow. When I read it again just now, it made me think of these last few years. Those who didn't go along with vaccine were ostracized. The whole Hillary-Trump-Biden situation was the same way, if you weren't for one, you were denounced unpatriotic or an extremist of the opposition party. Now, if you question the main narrative of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, you're automatically sent to the fringes as a conspiracy theorist, and a fascist.
Try to forget, for a moment, the fact that Göring was a nazy, do you see the power of his thinking? All you have to do is convince people they're being attacked, they'll go to war for you.
War is wrong, no matter how you look at it. The manipulation of humans to fight wars is even worst. It's a silent killer that destroys the soul... all these soldiers throughout history, I'm willing to bet that most of them have been, in one way or another, manipulated to serve voluntarily. War is much bigger than we know.
Get ready too, because this isn't over, the next time there's a crisis dominating your world, look for that same pattern. They're getting closer and closer to having full control... next will be a war on currency. Don't let them control your money.
