This year, something terrible happened, it an unexpected occurrence in Kenya, it is a tragedy. In the month of April 2025, started this heavy rains fell for days without stopping. The ground couldn’t take it anymore, and soon, floods swept across many parts of the country. I was shocked I saw videos online and I felt somehow depressed. People were crying, water was covering houses, and cars were floating like toys on the street.
The worst part was that many people died. News said undisclosed number of people lost their lives, and thousands lost their homes. Roads were destroyed, bridges collapsed, and some towns were cut off completely. I saw one video where a whole family was rescued from their house. It was sad but also scary and terrible.
It made me think: what if this happened in my area? What would I do? Would I be ready or am I going to survive it.
Natural disasters don’t send a warning no signal for it. They come suddenly. But we can still do things to reduce the damage. Firstly to avoid this, I think governments should stop people from building houses near rivers or flood zones. That’s dangerous. Also, we need to make sure our drainage systems are wider and are not blocked. I’ve noticed that in many places, people cause throw waste into gutters. When it rains, the water has nowhere to go, and it floods.
Also, I feel like we don’t talk enough about emergency plans. Schools, churches, even small communities should have a flood escape plan in which it is definitely important. We should know where to run to when water starts rising.
When I saw what happened in Kenya, I felt really bad. And something like that have been happening in many nations. I said a prayer for the victims and shared some posts to create awareness. But more than that, I promised myself I would learn more about how to stay safe during disasters and educate others too.
Let’s not wait until something terrible happens to us before taking action. Nature is powerful, but with the right steps, we can reduce how much it hurts us.
