Earth is in danger, the planet is constantly abused by the very creatures (mankind) it has done nothing but accommodate since their very existence. Humans are causing damage to their environment in the most vile yet ridiculous means possible : POLLUTION.
Pollution has now become one of the most critical challenges that plagues Mother Earth. Meta AI defines Pollution as The contamination of the environment through the release of harmful substances, waste, or pollutants. It affects the air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil that supports our ecosystems, and the natural world around us. Human activities such as industrial processes, agricultural practices, and transportation, as well as natural events like volcanic eruptions, contribute to pollution.
Everywhere you turn, there is evidence of its tenets ranging from minor littering, dumping massive heaps of refuse on public roads up to the toxic fumes generated from machines. One way or the other, everyone has made personal contact with pollution. At its current level, pollution is no longer a personal issue but a global disaster that affects the entire inhabitants of this planet thus needs to be curbed before it becomes THE END. The most painful part about this whole issue is that some folks either don't know their actions have negative implications on the environment or won't acknowledge just so they won't stop yet end up complaining when they become victims of their decisions.
In this part of the world, the results of pollution live with people as a piece of their culture. A huge percentage of Nigeria's population pay no attention to the dangers of pollution. The streets are constantly littered, the cruel reality of lengthy power outages have pushed citizens to purchase generators that produce thick black fumes that pollute the air and restrict effective breathing in public spaces. The country is so victimized that I can comfortably vouch that you can find all forms of pollution located at every street in unprecedented proportions. As a Nigerian who experiences this daily, I believe the deadliest types of pollution are water and air respectively. I have seen floods destroy homes and properties as a result of unsanctioned refuge dumping in carnal, sewages or water ways. Water pollution further results in limited access to clean water and endangers the life of marine creatures.
As a boy, I watched a shocking news on television about an entire family of 7 dying as a result of inhaling fumes all through night from the very machine they turned to give them power. This sent shivers down my spine and it was at that moment I realized pollution is not only dangerous to the health but life threatening as well. Things like this are nothing new and will only get worse until something is done to combat this self inflicted problem.
Below are recommended measures that needs to be adhere to to keep pollution at bay
- Adequate Waste disposal management: Both the government and private bodies must collaborate to create sites where refuge can be disposed of while also investing in proper waste collection processes.
- Recycling : objects like plastics and books can always be recycled for reuse to prevent excessive waste.
- Strict environmental laws should be created and enforced to sanction individuals from pollution.
- Awareness programs should be a necessity to educate people about how to handle waste and the dangers associated with polluting.
- Community services should be taken more seriously, people need to volunteer for environmental clean up as it will not only keep the surrounding clean but also bring people together....
There are countless ways of controlling pollution in this contemporary era. However, they all require the collaborative efforts of everyone to produce the right results. We all need to transcend the mentality of "it is not my concern because I am not affected by it". As long as you are living, breathing and existing here on earth, then this is your business. Fight towards making the earth a better place one proper disposal at a time because our true enemy is not the man behind the mask but waste staring at you in the face.
Thank you all
