There is no doubt that Artificial Intelligence is becoming a very big part of our lives today. Almost everything we do now is connected to the digital space, and somehow AI is always involved. I always ask myself, What was the real reason behind creating AI in the first place? I believe that the initial purpose of creating AI was to make life easier for humans. We all want something that will make life more easier for us as humans, solve our problems faster, and handle difficult tasks that take time and effort for humans to handle.
AI has taken over everything now. AI is everywhere. I was checking on TikTok last week and I saw one of the Nigerian content creators showcasing his new car, this car is a self-driving car, and this is the work of AI, AI is making its way into every part of life. But the question is, is this a good thing or a bad thing?
For me, I believe that AI has both positive and negative sides. Let’s start with the positive side. One very clear example is in the health sector. AI is helping doctors to detect diseases early, sometimes even faster than humans can. Some machines can read scans and identify problems like cancer or infections. This has saved so many lives because early detection means early treatment. In this case, AI is doing something very good for the world.
Another positive example is in the banking sector. AI has made online banking safer and faster. For example, some banks use AI to detect fraud. Some months ago I wanted to invest in an online business and I had to make the transfer to one particular account number, as I was about to send the money to this account my bank app stopped me and sent a message to me that the person was a scammer, I was so happy because If it was before I would have sent the money and get scammed.
There is nothing that has advantages that doesn't have disadvantages, as much as I like these good parts of AI, I cannot close my eyes to the negative side. I saw a video of our president online saying things that he didn't do and promising to frustrate us more in the remaining tenure, when I saw this video I knew it was fake, people now use AI to create fake images, fake videos. This is very dangerous because people can use these tools to lie and deceive others.
Another disadvantage is that AI is now taking over the job industry, most companies or factories that need workers now prefer to use robots which landed most people unemployed, they rely on AI and discharge their workers because they believe AI would carry out the work diligently and faster than humans, AI doesn't get tired or angry. Now people are losing their jobs and finding it difficult to feed their families.
If I had the power to stop AI completely, I would not stop it. The reason is simple AI also brings many good things that can make life better. But if I had the chance to control how AI is used, I would make sure that strict rules are put in place to prevent the bad sides from growing. AI should not be used to spread lies or take away people’s jobs without creating new ones for them.
Some people are fully in support of AI, while some are strongly against it. But I am in between. I see both the good and the bad. AI can help the world and can as well harm it if not properly managed. It depends on us humans to make the right choices. AI is not going anywhere. It has come to stay. But whether it makes the digital space better or worse depends on how we all use it.
