I never understood the saying "Prevention is better than cure" until that evening, it was some minutes past 11:00 p.m. I had been really sick for days and had just went to get drugs, thinking it was just a normal stomach pain and that I would be fine soon. I had already been having that pain for a while but shoved it under the carpet, I kept telling myself "I’ll be fine" , I went to my cousin’s place for the holidays so I didn’t tell anyone—not my family, not my cousins. I knew telling them would make them worry.
My family isn’t really keen on regular medical checkups but they wouldn’t hesitate to go to the hospital if they notice the slightest change in the body, I hated going to the hospital so I barely spoke up even if I felt something strange going on inside of my body.
That night was no different, the pain I felt increased so much that I fainted and I was rushed to the hospital—they ran some tests and it was discovered that my appendix had ruptured, so the doctor booked me immediately for surgery the next day. Normally people don’t survive a ruptured appendicitis so it was by God’s grace that I did.
My surgery happened the next day without any further delay and it was successful. After that, I began going for checkups as the doctor advised, to monitor my healing process and from there I got used to regular checkups. My first proper checkup experience wasn’t so bad aside from the fact that you have to wait for ages before it gets to your turn.
There are many people who have died from health negligence, just as the saying goes "health is wealth". People should have a balanced mindset, not compulsorily frequenting the hospital for any little inconvenience, but also not completely avoiding it when it’s truly necessary.
