AI became a buzzword in the last few years. I would say that it has already been a buzzword in health sciences for a while. Way before ChatGPT, I went to a bioinformatics conference in 2019 where there was a whole section with works using AI. The CEO of my company also wanted to use this buzzword in his institute to bring investments. So we started to go through AI methods in the cancer biomarkers discovery in liquid biopsy. I assume that the data wasn't the best for that, but still, he wanted it so bad that we spent some time on that. The same way that AI bring us hope in many science, but people usually only see the possibility in ChatGPT and other chatbots bot a perspective.
Yesterday, my wife sent me a one-page spreadsheet as a PDF via WhatsApp and asked if I could use ChatGPT to add two extra rows. She said that her free usages for that purpose were already gone. It is interesting that I didn't know that this was possible. I did some picture modifications already with a good outcome. I offered her a more controlled approach, which was transforming the PDF into a DOC format and then adding these 2 extra rows with two extra values. She got mad at me and to use ChatGPT instead. I used, it was interesting that it made the modifications, but the original format of the file was totally changed, he removed the divisions of the table. She accepted the file as what she needed.
The conclusion for me in this story is that the person preferred a very fast solution instead of a slower and perhaps with better detailed result. Transforming the file into the an editable document would take a bit more of time to add these 2 rows, maybe 5-10 min more. And the job would be perfect. When sending to ChatGPT this type of job you have to be careful to pay attention that the output at least contains the exact data that you need. I already saw the chatbot transform letters and numbers into something that doesn't exist, for example. The example below is a figure generated by AI in a published peer-reviewed scientific journal. People at the time noticed the "mutant" mouse with weird anatomy, like lots of testicles. However, if you check,k even the words in the figure are awful. Invented words and misspellings.
So AI texts, images, and even documents can be made with these chatbots. But the beauty of AI is what a friend mentioned in one post one day. The possibility of training computers to identify something that we would take years to do using our current techniques. One of them is the amazing tool called AlphaFold. This tool was created by Google (their hands are even touching science). It predicts the structure of a protein using the amino acid sequence. The structure of proteins is very important to understand molecular interactions in our bodies in health and disease. The chemical bonds between amino acids are difficult to see, only X-ray crystallography can be used, but is still challenging to use. So an AI method for sure opens the door to predicting these structures and maybe having novel drugs to treat diseases.
AI can't be stopped, it has many possibilities to help us; however, people have been used for laziness as well, like I cited above. Even in Hive, we see such bad examples of users using AI for laziness. But in my opinion, it will be difficult to stop even that; it is becoming more difficult to diagnose what is machine-made. That is the dark future that AI is bringing in addition to the good things.

Muito antes do ChatGPT, fui a uma conferência de bioinformática em 2019, onde havia uma seção inteira com trabalhos usando IA. O CEO da minha empresa também queria usar esse termo da moda em seu instituto para atrair investimentos. Então, começamos a analisar métodos de IA na descoberta de biomarcadores de câncer em biópsia líquida. Presumo que os dados não fossem os melhores para isso, mas, ainda assim, ele queria tanto que investimos algum tempo nisso. Da mesma forma que a IA nos traz esperança em muitas ciências, mas as pessoas geralmente só veem essa possibilidade no ChatGPT e em outros chatbots, mas com uma perspectiva.
Ontem, minha esposa me enviou uma planilha de uma página em PDF pelo WhatsApp e perguntou se eu poderia usar o ChatGPT para adicionar duas linhas extras. Ela disse que seus usos gratuitos para esse propósito já haviam acabado. É interessante que eu não sabia que isso era possível. Já fiz algumas modificações nas imagens com um bom resultado. Ofereci a ela uma abordagem mais controlada, que era transformar o PDF em um formato DOC e, em seguida, adicionar essas duas linhas extras com dois valores extras. Ela ficou brava comigo e decidiu usar o ChatGPT. Eu usei, foi interessante que ele fez as modificações, mas o formato original do arquivo foi totalmente alterado, ele removeu as divisões da tabela. A conclusão para mim nesta história é que a pessoa preferiu uma solução muito rápida em vez de uma mais lenta e talvez com um resultado mais detalhado. Transformar o arquivo em um documento editável levaria um pouco mais de tempo para adicionar essas duas linhas, talvez de 5 a 10 minutos a mais. E o trabalho seria perfeito. Ao enviar para o ChatGPT esse tipo de trabalho, você precisa ter cuidado para garantir que a saída contenha pelo menos os dados exatos que você precisa. Já vi o chatbot transformar letras e números em algo que não existe, por exemplo. O exemplo abaixo é uma figura gerada por IA em um periódico científico revisado por pares publicado. Na época, as pessoas notaram o camundongo "mutante" com uma anatomia estranha, com muitos testículos. No entanto, se você verificar, até as palavras na figura são horríveis. Palavras inventadas e erros de ortografia.
Então, textos, imagens e até documentos de IA podem ser feitos com esses chatbots. Mas a beleza da IA é o que um amigo mencionou em uma postagem um dia. A possibilidade de treinar computadores para identificar algo que levaríamos anos para fazer usando nossas técnicas atuais. Uma delas é a incrível ferramenta chamada AlphaFold. Esta ferramenta foi criada pelo Google (suas mãos estão até tocando a ciência). Ela prevê a estrutura de uma proteína usando a sequência de aminoácidos. A estrutura das proteínas é muito importante para entender as interações moleculares em nossos corpos na saúde e na doença. As ligações químicas entre os aminoácidos são difíceis de ver, apenas a cristalografia de raios X pode ser usada, mas ainda é desafiadora de usar. Então, um método de IA com certeza abre a porta para prever essas estruturas e talvez ter novos medicamentos para tratar doenças.
A IA não pode ser parada, ela tem muitas possibilidades de nos ajudar; no entanto, as pessoas também têm sido usadas por preguiça, como citei acima. Mesmo no Hive, vemos exemplos ruins de usuários usando IA por preguiça. Mas, na minha opinião, será difícil impedir até isso; está se tornando cada vez mais difícil diagnosticar o que é feito por máquinas. Esse é o futuro sombrio que a IA está trazendo, além das coisas boas.
