Culture is universal, this means that every part of this earth have their own culture that makes them unique in their own way. In the universality of culture, there are various aspects of culture every community has including their language, symbols, norms and even morals. Ghana my country is a country knows for its diverse culture and the good part of all this is that we all have grown to learn and adapt to other’s cultures over time.
However, we are all also bound to experience cultural shock when we find ourselves in some places we haven’t been before. I experiment my first cultural shock when I moved to the northern part of Ghana some years back. For someone who grew up and spent her whole life in the south, so many things were new to me. I didn’t understand so many things but I had to gradually adapt to the culture here.
Here in Ghana, there are various things you’d love to experience from various cultures and some of them include experiencing the Damba festival celebrated by the Dagombas from the northern part of the country, Homowo festival by the Ga’s down south. Not forgetting the food, you should try our hot Ga kenkey with pepper and fish, our tuo zaafi with ayoyo soup, ampesi and not forgetting almighty banku with pepper or okra soup. You might also like to try on our Batakari, and Ankara styled clothes, slippers and beads. Aside these, there’s a lot more to see and do here in Ghana, but these should be a start to appreciating Ghanaian culture. I grew up in a community with people from different tribes and ethnic groups and so I got to experience most of these things unlike others.
If there’s one culture I love with all my heart and wish to experience, it would be the culture of the Yuroba’s from Nigeria. A part of my family is from Nigeria but we have long lost touch of those routes. Sometimes about Yuroba’s just make me move them, especially their language. I have been watching so many movies just to learn their language because why not. Additionally, you should see how the celebrate their festivals and weddings in grant style. Man, I really look forward to experiencing their culture in full force. I’m just waiting for @moremoney28 to get me a Yuroba husband and all my problems would be solved.
Culture is a beautiful thing but what’s more beautiful is getting to experience and appreciate other cultures. As individuals, we should all make it a point to go out there and explore other cultures aside from ours. You’d be surprised with what you’d find out and even develop love for.
