It’s really amazing how syrups or small pills can cure sicknesses, treat diseases and even save lives. There is one thing I love about science, particularly in the field of pharmacy and that is being able to combine some subjects like biology, chemistry, anatomy and technology to produce medicines that can ease one’s pain.
I often wonder how scientists and pharmacists work together to understand the human body, understand illnesses and then develop drugs to get rid of them or manage them. I’ve watched severally in movies how these professionals work in the lab with different equipments, innovation and ingenuity. From antibiotics that combat against infections to vaccines to boost immunity to insulin that helps manage diabetes—Pharmacy is one powerful force in the healthcare field.
Thanks to them also and their efforts , doctors are able to inject their patients with anesthesia before surgeries—putting the patient in a deep sleep so they don’t feel the pain. I grew up wanting to be so many things, but Pharmacy was something I really wanted to study but I didn’t get the chance to.
Even though I didn’t end up as a pharmacist, I still admire the field and have great respect for those who are pharmacists. My older cousin suffered from severe ulcer pains at one time, she refused taking drugs saying herbal remedies were more effective. After she had tried several herbal remedies with no result, she finally went to a hospital. The doctor prescribed drugs for her to pick up at a pharmaceutical store, and since she began taking those drugs she has gotten much better.
Pharmacists put in a lot of work into touching lives and restoring hope. Unfortunately, there are people out there who are quacks, who know nothing about the field and who don’t care genuinely about the lives of people—they sell fake drugs that can cause more harm than good in one’s body. These people ruin the reputations of genuine pharmacists who have worked hard, we should beware of them and be cautious. I was once a victim.
Pharmacy is a strong reminder that science is a source of hope and compassion.
