Gustavo Iván Manrique Salazar era una oruga que trabajaba con su papá en el sembradío. Era el hijo menor y como todo hijo menor de aquella familia debía llevar el legado de su oficio a la siguiente generación. Desde niño, escuchaba a su papá explicándole lo importante de su labor y cómo debía ser ejecutada con total precisión, como lo hizo su abuelo y el abuelo de su abuelo.
— Gustavo, hijo, debes comer cada hoja empezando por la punta, tres bocados a la derecha y luego tres a la izquierda, y luego de nuevo derecha, izquierda, derecha, izquierda. Al terminar la hoja agradeces al ciclo infinito y pasas a la siguiente, así hasta el amanecer.
El padre de Gustavo sabía que su hijo era distinto, veía en él un brillo especial, era su mayor orgullo, "Gustavo será una oruga muy recordada en los tiempos venideros, será uno de los mejores devoradores de la orug-historia*
Noche tras noche hacían lo mismo, la familia entera y todas las familias que vivían en el sembradío. Comían cientos de hojas, agradecían al Ciclo infinito y recordaban su valioso papel en la cadena alimenticia. Alimentarse para alimentar a otros. Al amanecer iban a dormir para empezar en la noche la nueva faena.
Gustavo Iván Manrique Salazar was a caterpillar who worked with his father in the fields. He was the youngest son and like all youngest sons in that family, he had to carry the legacy of his trade to the next generation. Since he was a child, he listened to his father explaining to him the importance of his work and how it should be carried out with total precision, as his grandfather and his grandfather's grandfather did.
— Gustavo, son, you must eat each leaf starting from the tip, three bites to the right and then three to the left, and then again right, left, right, left. When you finish the leaf you thank the infinite cycle and move on to the next one, and so on until dawn.
Gustavo's father knew that his son was different, he saw in him a special glow, it was his greatest pride, "Gustavo will be a caterpillar very well remembered in the times to come, he will be one of the best eaters in the history of the orug-history*".
Night after night they did the same thing, the whole family and all the families that lived in the plantation. They ate hundreds of leaves, thanked the infinite Cycle and remembered their valuable role in the food chain. Feeding themselves to feed others. At dawn they would go to sleep to start the new task at night.
Pero Gustavo ya era una oruga adolescente y empezaba a cuestionar muchas cosas:
– ¿Qué pasa si empiezo desde la base de la hoja? ¿O si como primero todo el lado derecho y luego todo el lado izquierdo? ¿O si dejamos de comer hojas por un día? ¿Y si sencillamente no quiero vivir solo para ser alimento de otros? ¿Qué hay más allá de estas ramas?
Un día a Gustavo se le ocurrió que, en lugar de dormir todo el día para comer durante toda la noche, podía conocer el terreno un poco más allá de las cuatro matas de naranja en la que su familia habitaba.
Fue entonces cuando encontró algo que cambiaría su vida para siempre. Gustavo escuchó por primera vez la música. Se había acercado a la casa de los humanos. En aquella casa se escuchaba todo tipo de música, a toda hora. Desde ese día Gustavo se escapaba casi todos los días a disfrutar de grandes conciertos. Beethoven, Mozart, Louis Amstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sinatra, Caetano Veloso, Lila Down, Simón Díaz, Gualberto Ibarreto, Beyoncé, Shakira, Olga Tañón, The Beatles, Ramones, Rolling Stone, Guns and roses, y tantos otros, pero su favorito era el grupo Queen.
Empezó a soñar con ser estrella de rock, eso era lo que quería más que nada en el mundo. Estaba dispuesto a dejar su naranjal. No le importaba ya nada más, iba a hablar con su familia. Pero cada tarde, cuando llegaba a su casa dispuesto a hablar con su padre se paralizaba, se le hacía un nudo en la garganta y pensaba en lo decepcionado y triste que estaría.
– Otro día hablo con él – se decía.
But Gustavo was already an adolescent caterpillar and was beginning to question many things:
— What happens if I start from the base of the leaf? Or if I eat first the whole right side and then the whole left side? Or if I stop eating leaves for a day? What if I simply do not want to live just to be food for others? What is beyond these branches?
One day it occurred to Gustavo that, instead of sleeping all day to eat all night, he could get to know the land a little beyond the four orange bushes where his family lived.
It was then that he found something that would change his life forever. Gustavo heard music for the first time. He had approached the human house. In that house, all kinds of music could be heard at all times. From that day on, Gustavo escaped almost every day to enjoy great concerts. Beethoven, Mozart, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sinatra, Caetano Veloso, Lila Down, Simón Díaz, Gualberto Ibarreto, Beyoncé, Shakira, Olga Tañón, The Beatles, Ramones, Rolling Stone, Guns and Roses, and many others, but his favorite was the band Queen.
He began to dream of being a rock star, that was what he wanted more than anything in the world. He was ready to leave his orange grove. He didn't care about anything else anymore, he was going to talk to his family. But every afternoon, when he got home ready to talk to his father, he would freeze, a lump would form in his throat and he would think about how disappointed and sad he would be. - Another day I'll talk to him - he would say to himself.
Así pasaron los días, los meses, los años. Tiempo después, Gustavo enfermó, le diagnosticaron una grave enfermedad, de la cual pocos se recuperaban. Ese día fue el más triste y aterrador de su vida, pero también fue el día de su libertad. Para la noche invitó a su familia a una reunión familiar, les pidió que se sentaran y se pusieran cómodos, necesitaba decirles la verdad de lo que le pasaba..
Ninguno de los presentes en la sala supo qué hacer o que decir cuando vieron a Gustavo salir de detrás de unas cortinas, vestido con una lycra entera de rombos, al abrir la cortina estaban dispuestos unos aparatos que no entendían. Gustavo parado frente a un micrófono, con su guitarra eléctrica en las manos, encendió unos enormes amplificadores, les dijo "Papá, mamá, familia, esto es lo que soy y lo que haré de ahora en adelante", y empezó a cantar con el alma "Somebody to love" de Queen.
And so the days, months and years went by. Some time later, Gustavo fell ill, he was diagnosed with a serious illness, from which few recovered. That day was the saddest and most terrifying day of his life, but it was also the day of his freedom. For the evening he invited his family to a family gathering, he asked them to sit down and make themselves comfortable, he needed to tell them the truth of what was happening to him.
None of those present in the room knew what to do or what to say when they saw Gustavo come out from behind some curtains, dressed in a full rash guard with rhombouses, when they opened the curtain there were some devices that they did not understand. Gustavo stood in front of a microphone, with his electric guitar in his hands, turned on some huge amplifiers, told them "Dad, mom, family, this is what I am and what I will do from now on", and began to sing "Somebody to love" by Queen with his soul.
Al terminar se hizo un silencio largo, seguido de aplausos, llantos y vítores de su familia y de los vecinos que, atraídos por tan magnífica interpretación, se asomaban por todas las puertas y ventanas de la casa.
Su potente voz, su pasión y su increíble talento para la música sorprendió a todos y los llenó de tanta alegría que nadie, ni siquiera su padre, le hizo ningún reclamo por la decisión tomada. Su padre lo abrazó y le dijo "Siempre supe que tú serías recordado por los tiempos venideros". Luego de aquello, Gustavo recobró su salud y sus ganas de vivir.
When he finished, there was a long silence, followed by applause, cries and cheers from her family and neighbors who, attracted by such a magnificent performance, peeked through all the doors and windows of the house.
His powerful voice, his passion and his incredible talent for music surprised everyone and filled them with so much joy that no one, not even his father, complained to him about his Choice. His father hugged him and told him "I always knew that you would be remembered for times to come". After that, Gustavo recovered his health and his will to live.
Desde entonces se hizo llamar "Gusiman" el rock star del naranjal. Ahora, Gusiman cierra todos sus conciertos con su canción favorita de Queen.
Since then he became known as "Gusiman", the rock star of the orange grove. Ar The present time, Gusiman closes all of his concerts with his favorite Queen song.
