The evolution of species according to Charles Darwin, the abolition of slavery, women's rights, vaccination, marriage for all and LGBT+ rights, ecology, climate change, the spherical Earth, artificial intelligence... Why do some new strong ideas take so long to be accepted by society?
I see 4 key points in this issue.
1. Beliefs and habits
Human beings are naturally attached to their beliefs and habits. This is, in my opinion, the most important point. Allow me to spend more time on it.
A new idea challenges a way of thinking that is already deeply rooted in one's environment (grandparents, parents, friends). Our societies are shaped by traditions that seem "normal" at a given time. Questioning these traditions takes time because it first requires deconstructing beliefs passed down from generation to generation. This way of thinking instinctively generates rejection.
We see this both with the adoption of money and that of cryptocurrencies.
Indeed, gold and silver were used for millennia before the introduction of banknotes. Banknotes were rejected because they seemed "worthless" compared to gold. This is the adoption time.
It took time to build trust in fiat currency, guaranteed by states. This is mistrust.
Today, people are used to using bank cards or their phones to pay online. Let's not forget that PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay took time to establish themselves. And many people still prefer to pay in cash and fear the day when money will be entirely digital. To change these habits, a significant journey has already been made, particularly in infrastructure with banks, ATMs, and online services. This is habit and ease of use.
For cryptocurrencies, if you are reading these lines, you probably don't feel concerned by them. Nevertheless, Bitcoin was created in 2008. Many considered it a scam or a passing trend. This is the adoption phase.
And for good reason, cryptos are not guaranteed by a state, which raises mistrust. This is the mistrust of decentralized systems.
Moreover, blockchain technology is extremely complex for the general public to understand, which slows its adoption. Even today, although I am on Hive, I struggle to understand many blockchain-related topics. This is habit and ease of use.
The adoption of cryptocurrencies is progressing but takes time. More and more businesses accept Bitcoin payments. Financial institutions are beginning to take an interest in it (Bitcoin ETFs, banks offering crypto services). And most importantly, some countries, like El Salvador, have legalized Bitcoin as an official currency.
To adopt a new idea, a change in belief must first be established. But this is not the only barrier.
2. The threat to institutions and/or influential groups
Many revolutionary concepts threaten entire institutions or influential groups. I am thinking in particular of everything related to religion, political power, economic interests...
For example, large polluting industries have long denied climate change to preserve their profits. Unfortunately, this is still the case today.
Going further, I can also mention Charles Darwin's ideas on the evolution of species through natural selection. And this is still relatively recent. Indeed, in the 19th century, the majority of Western societies were deeply influenced by Christianity. As a result, the idea that humans could descend from a common ancestor with apes was seen as an attack on the divine role in creation. The Church and many believers rejected Darwin's theory because it left no room for divine intervention in the evolution of living beings.
3. The absence of immediate proof
It takes time to gather data and convince. Today, a little less so, because we store data everywhere and AI facilitates sorting and research. But let's take the example of the Big Bang. This theory describes the origin of the universe from a very dense and hot state. At first, this idea was based on hypotheses without accessible proof for the general public. Some theories can be tested experimentally. But the Big Bang concerns a unique event that occurred about 13.8 billion years ago. The theory predicted that an ancient radiation (cosmic background radiation) should be found in the universe. This radiation was considered an echo of the initial explosion. But no one had detected it until the mid-1960s, so the theory remained fragile. Today, it is the dominant theory. But is it the final one? Hard to say.
Nevertheless, without proof, it is difficult to make a new idea widely accepted.
4. Education and the dissemination of ideas
An idea can only be accepted if it is explained and understood. It took me a few days or weeks to explain the basics of Hive to @altheana. I'm quite bad at simplification, so I made her read many articles on the subject. And I am convinced that education and popularization play a key role in the adoption of a new idea.
This is exactly the reason why the acceptance of marriage for all or women's rights has progressed as mindsets evolved, thanks to debates among politicians, non-politicians, social networks, and social movements.
To conclude on this subject, even if some ideas take centuries to establish themselves, history proves that when faced with concrete proof and when a form of unanimous adherence takes place, they always end up being accepted. And even if this process can be accelerated by science, education (popularization), and communication, it will always be subject to the natural resistance of the human brain, which is ultimately just a defense mechanism.
The acceptance of new ideas is a struggle between the comfort of the known and the inevitability of progress. Before embracing progress, don’t forget to educate yourself.

This process of resistance also applies to our personal growth. Changing habits, adopting a new routine, integrating a new mindset, or embracing a different lifestyle... all of these face the same resistance.
Many people stagnate simply because they have not yet discovered the tools and approaches that could help them move forward. This is why books, podcasts, and mentors are so important.
If one grows up in an environment where personal development is seen as useless, it becomes difficult to take an interest in it without feeling doubt and guilt. Thus, our surroundings and environment influence our ability to evolve.

Pourquoi certaines nouvelles idées fortes mettent-elles autant de temps à être acceptées par la société ?
Je vois 4 points à cette problématique.
1. Les croyances et les habitudes
L'être humain est naturellement attaché à ses croyances et habitudes. C'est le point qui est, selon moi, le plus important. Permettez-moi donc d'y passer plus de temps.
Une nouvelle idée remet en cause un cadre de pensée déjà bien ancré dans son environnement (grands-parents, parents, amis). Nos sociétés sont façonnées par des traditions qui semblent "normales" à une époque donnée. Remettre en question ces traditions prend du temps, car il faut d'abord déconstruire des croyances transmises de génération en génération. Ce cadre de pensée génère instinctivement du rejet.
On le voit aussi bien avec l'adoption de la monnaie que celle des cryptomonnaies.
En effet, l'or et l'argent ont été utilisés pendant des millénaires avant l'apparition des billets de banque. Les billets étaient rejetés, car ils semblaient "sans valeur" comparés à l'or. C'est le temps d'adoption.
Il a fallu du temps pour instaurer la confiance dans la monnaie fiduciaire, garantie par les États. C'est la méfiance.
Aujourd'hui, les gens sont habitués à utiliser des cartes bancaires ou leur téléphone pour payer en ligne. N'oublions pas que PayPal, Apple Pay et Google Pay ont mis du temps à s'imposer. Et de nombreuses personnes préfèrent encore payer en liquide et redoutent le jour où la monnaie sera entièrement numérique. Pour changer ces habitudes, un beau chemin a déjà été parcouru, notamment dans les infrastructures avec les banques, distributeurs et services en ligne. C'est l'habitude et la facilité d'utilisation.
Pour les cryptomonnaies, nul doute que si vous lisez ces lignes, vous ne vous sentirez pas concerné par celles-ci. Toujours est-il que le Bitcoin a été créé en 2008. Beaucoup le considéraient comme une arnaque ou une mode passagère. C'est la phase d'adoption.
Et pour cause, les cryptos ne sont pas garanties par un État, ce qui suscite la méfiance. C'est la méfiance envers les systèmes décentralisés.
Qui plus est, la technologie blockchain est extrêmement complexe à comprendre pour le grand public, ce qui ralentit son adoption. D'ailleurs, même si je suis sur Hive aujourd'hui, j'ai un mal fou à comprendre tout un tas de sujets liés à la blockchain. C'est l'habitude et la facilité d'utilisation.
L'adoption des cryptomonnaies progresse, mais prend du temps. De plus en plus d'entreprises acceptent les paiements en Bitcoin. Des institutions financières commencent à s'y intéresser (ETF Bitcoin, banques qui proposent des services crypto). Et surtout, certains pays comme El Salvador ont légalisé le Bitcoin comme monnaie officielle.
Pour adopter une nouvelle idée, il y a donc d'abord un changement de croyance à instaurer. Mais ce n'est pas la seule barrière.
2. La menace des institutions et/ou des groupes d'influence
Beaucoup de concepts révolutionnaires menacent des institutions complètes ou des groupes d'influence. Je pense notamment à tout ce qui touche à la religion, au pouvoir politique, aux intérêts économiques...
Par exemple, les grandes industries polluantes ont longtemps nié le changement climatique pour préserver leurs profits. Malheureusement, c'est d'ailleurs encore le cas.
Pour aller plus loin, je peux aussi évoquer les idées de Charles Darwin sur l'évolution des espèces par sélection naturelle. Et c'est encore assez récent. En effet, au XIXᵉ siècle, la majorité des sociétés occidentales étaient profondément influencées par la religion chrétienne. De ce fait, l'idée que l'Homme puisse descendre d'un ancêtre commun avec les singes était perçue comme une atteinte au rôle divin dans la création. L'Église et de nombreux croyants ont rejeté la théorie de Darwin, car elle ne laissait pas de place à l'intervention divine dans l'évolution des êtres vivants.
3. L'absence de preuves immédiates
Il faut du temps pour accumuler des données et convaincre. Aujourd'hui un peu moins, car nous stockons les données partout et l'IA facilite le tri et les recherches. Mais prenons l'exemple du Big Bang. Cette théorie décrit l'origine de l'univers à partir d'un état très dense et chaud. Au début, cette idée reposait sur des hypothèses sans preuves accessibles au grand public. Certaines théories peuvent être testées expérimentalement. Mais le Big Bang concerne un événement unique, survenu il y a environ 13,8 milliards d'années. La théorie prédisait qu'on devait trouver un rayonnement ancien (rayonnement fossile) dans l'univers. Ce rayonnement était considéré comme un écho de l'explosion initiale. Mais personne ne l'avait détecté avant le milieu des années 60, donc la théorie restait fragile. Aujourd'hui, c'est la théorie dominante. Est-ce pour autant la dernière ? Difficile à dire.
Toujours est-il que sans preuve, il est difficile de faire adopter une nouvelle idée.
4. L'éducation et la diffusion des idées
Une idée ne peut être acceptée que si elle est expliquée et comprise. J'ai mis quelques jours ou semaines à expliquer à @altheana les bases de Hive. Je suis assez mauvais en vulgarisation, je lui ai alors fait lire de nombreux articles à ce sujet. Et bien j'en suis convaincu, l'instruction et la vulgarisation jouent un rôle clé dans l'adoption d'une nouvelle idée.
C'est exactement la raison qui a fait que l'acceptation du mariage pour tous ou du droit des femmes a progressé à mesure que les mentalités évoluaient grâce aux débats des politiques, des non-politiques, des réseaux sociaux et des mouvements sociaux.
Pour finir avec ce sujet, même si certaines idées mettent des siècles à s'imposer, l'histoire prouve que face à des preuves concrètes et lorsqu'une forme d'adhésion unanime se met en place, elles finissent toujours par être acceptées. Et même si ce processus peut être accéléré par la science, l'éducation (vulgarisation) et la communication, il restera toujours soumis aux résistances naturelles du cerveau humain, qui n'est qu'un mécanisme de défense.
L'acceptation des nouvelles idées est une lutte entre le confort du connu et l'évidence du progrès. Avant d'embrasser le progrès, n'oubliez pas de vous former.
Les nouvelles idées pour votre développement personnel
Ce processus de résistance s'applique aussi à notre évolution personnelle. Changer ses habitudes, adopter une nouvelle routine, intégrer un nouvel état d'esprit ou un mode de vie différent... tout ça est confronté aux mêmes résistances.
Beaucoup de personnes stagnent simplement parce qu'elles n'ont pas encore découvert les outils et les approches qui pourraient les aider à avancer. C'est pour cette raison que les livres, les podcasts et les mentors sont si importants.
Si l'on grandit dans un cadre où le développement personnel est vu comme inutile, il est difficile de s'y intéresser sans ressentir du tout et de la culpabilité. Ainsi, notre entourage et notre environnement influencent notre capacité à évoluer.
