Jordan Peterson is known to also mention “ clean your room”. It’s actually pretty powerful and according to him is also the first step towards betterment. He argues that cleaning up our own room will give us a sense of control within our environment. It’s an interesting talk that you can watch here. I personally agree that cleaning up a room is the first step. When I was on the lowest low, my room was extremely disorganized until I decided to clean up and eventually embrace minimalism into my life. At one point, I got so obsessed about getting rid of things and eventually left with only a few things, it was much easier to keep track of things. However, though I was much better, being consistent wasn’t my forte especially when I used to travel a lot and sort of abandoned my room. Until the last 2 years where I try to keep things organized before I leave. Even trying to keep them clean, dust was still collecting and I eventually still had to clean them. Then, the other day, I was almost falling into my old habit which was putting things out for later.
I made an excuse because I was just busy navigating my new environment once again and meeting up with friends. So, my room was once again a little bit unkempt. If you’ve noticed I also missed posting the personal development content a few times by now and only today, after cleaning up my room I was able to think clearly. I have a few lists that I use which helped me through my adulthood when it comes to cleaning.
- Dusting every twice a week, one during the weekend and another in the middle of the week.
- Laundry twice a week
- Trash thrice a week and is separated based on categories
- Cleaning up the sheets twice a week
- Shred papers every once a week and clean up the working table.
- Check expiry date once a week and throw away expired items.
Those lists are the things I do just to help me feel a lot less overwhelmed about cleaning and ensuring that things don't pile up really fast. But when things pile up, I usually take 4-5 hours deep cleaning and focusing on getting back on the routine. However, if I am home often those things aren’t an issue because most of the time my mom takes care of it and I was only helping her on the side. Now, it’s all up to me and since I am quite picky about my environment when I am on my own, once I get everything sorted in my room, it is also a lot easier to get back on track and back to hustling. What are your cleaning tricks to keep your life in check and control?
