What's buzzing, friends?
The term Horse Power has an exciting history.
It was first used in the late 18th century by James Watt to compare the output of his steam engine with the power of draft horses. Watt estimated that a horse could do about 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute and that one could do the work of about 20 men. So, he decided that one horsepower was equal to 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute.
The term has been used ever since to describe the power of engines. That is a pretty neat fact in itself, but today we are not looking at that, but rather vacuum cleaners.
Vacuum cleaners have a long and unique history, dating back to 1901 in London. The first vacuum cleaners were large, cumbersome machines that were difficult to operate. However, they quickly became popular due to their ability to thoroughly clean carpets and floors. Over the years, vacuum cleaners have undergone many changes and improvements, becoming more compact and powerful. Today, they are an essential household appliance for many people. While they may not be the most glamorous appliance, vacuum cleaners are definitely one of the most useful.
So why talk about horsepower? Well, the first vacuum cleaners were horse-powered!
Yes, when we read that, it took us a second to process it... so, take a second. Look at your vacuum, and think... what would that be like if I had to power it with horses... Hrmmm... Be grateful that technology has progressed over the last 100 years to the modern, small vacuum. Just amazing. You can read about the air-sucking history of the vacuum cleaner HERE.
Before you go, get some horses to see how many horses it takes to clean your room, scroll down, and get caught up on the happenings at DBuzz... then get your vacuum cleaner on!

Friday
@lauramica’s Friday photo challenges! The color this week is WHITE! White is a great color to take photos of because it is easy to match with other colors, and it reflects light well. This makes it a good choice for taking pictures indoors or in low-light situations. White also has a clean and fresh look that can make photos more attractive.
