El velero navegaba raudo por entre el mar con vientos moderados, perfectos para hinchar las velas y apagar el motor. Nuestro capitán pedía ayuda de cuando en cuando para halar los cabos de cualquiera de los sitios donde se necesitaba. Habíamos partido al mediodía de ese estupendo día desde la marina de la bahía de Bellingham e íbamos con rumbo a un parque estatal que sirve como reserva natural en las rutas de migración de las orcas, quienes comenzaban a bajar del ártico con la finalización del otoño.
The sailboat was sailing fast through the sea with moderate winds, perfect for inflating the sails and turning off the engine. Our captain would ask for help from time to time to pull the lines from any of the places where it was needed. We had departed at noon on this fine day from the Bellingham Bay Marina and were on our way to a state park that serves as a nature preserve on the migration routes of the orcas, who were beginning to come down from the Arctic with the end of fall.
Nada mejor que navegar con alguien experimentado y con excelente compañía: una pareja amiga del capitán y su hijo, la pareja anfitriona y una de sus hijas, mi esposa y yo. Aprovechamos el atardecer sobre la bahía para tomar imágenes, de esas que causan suspiros cuando las ves, pero que además son testimonio imborrable de uno de los espectáculos más sublimes de la naturaleza. Aunque esperábamos ver orcas en la ruta, no nos tropezamos con ninguna manada y cierta decepción flotó en el ambiente ¿Acaso no habíamos quedados más que satisfechos con el atardecer? La naturaleza puede ser caprichosa cuando se lo propone.
Nothing better than sailing with someone experienced and in excellent company: a couple who are friends of the captain and his son, the host couple and one of his daughters, my wife and I. Llegamos a destino con los últimos rayos del día y una dama que se encontraba navegando sola en su velero, nos ayudó a recibir la nave tomando el cabo principal y colaborando en el atraque del velero. Luego de dar gracias por su hospitalidad -cortesía de marinos- le preguntamos como había estado el clima "Frío pero soportable". Sabía lo que significaba. La noche estaría helada porque, para alguien acostumbrado al trópico escuchar a un residente de esas latitudes decir que está haciendo frío, es como haber viajado al polo norte mismo. Resignado nos dispusimos a dormir luego de cenar.
We arrived at our destination with the last rays of the day and a lady who was sailing alone, in her sailboat, helped us to receive the ship by taking the main cape and collaborating in the docking of the sailboat. After giving thanks for her hospitality - courtesy of sailors - we asked her how the weather had been "cold but bearable". I knew what it meant. Y tal como lo describió la dama, hizo un frío del demonio. Ni la doble muda de ropa con abrigo y frazada de lana incluída evitó que se colara la helada noche hasta los huesos. La bahía se encontraba tranquila y elegimos dormir en el velero. Con una entrante tan largo la marea se apaciguaba al punto de una calma chicha dentro de la ensenada que, más bien, inquietaba. Dormí lo mejor que pude dentro de las circunstancias y solo las ganas de orinar por el frío, me despertaron antes del alba y me obligaron a salir de mi abrigado refugio.
And just as the lady described, it was cold as hell. Not even the double change of clothes with a coat and wool blanket included prevented the frost from creeping up to her bones. The bay was quiet and we chose to sleep on the sailboat. With such a long inlet, the tide was calming to the point of an uneasy calm inside the cove which, rather, was disturbing. I slept the best I could under the circumstances and only the desire to urinate because of the cold woke me up before dawn and forced me out of my warm shelter.
Aproveché la madrugada para tomar más fotos antes que los niños se despertaran y los rayos del sol empezaran a calentar el ambiente. Con los adultos dormidos, me dispuse a jugar cartas con ambos y pasamos un rato muy agradable hasta que los adultos llamaron a desayunar. Luego de la comida, usamos el día entero para recorrer el inmenso parque, con un tamaño engañoso a ojo de mapa, tardamos entre 6 y ocho horas en recorrer con refrigerio intermedio. Al final del día nos convencimos de la razón para declarar ese lugar prístino como reserva natural.
I took advantage of the early morning hours to take more pictures before the children woke up and the sun's rays began to warm the atmosphere. With the adults asleep, I set out to play cards with both of them and we had a very nice time until the adults called for breakfast. After lunch, we used the whole day to walk around the huge park, which was deceptively large by the eye of the map, It took us between 6 and 8 hours to walk around with intermediate refreshments. Cenamos con avidez e hicimos una fogata en un bungalow cerca de la marina, para compartir, cantar, reír y tener la convicción de haber vivido unos días mágicos. Cuando terminó todo nos fuimos a dormir, fuí el último en conciliar el sueño. Una extraña bruma marina se coló por el entresijo de la romanilla en la puerta del camarote, no presté mucha atención porque ¡era normal! ¿acaso no sabía donde me encontraba? Y si la marinera nos dijo que haría frío, pues la bruma era el resultado de aquella predicción climatológica.
We had an avid dinner and made a fire in a bungalow near the marina, to share, sing, laugh and have the conviction of having lived some magical days. When it was all over we went to sleep, I was the last one to fall asleep. A strange sea mist came through the door of the cabin, I didn't pay much attention because: It was normal! Didn't I know where I was? And if the sailor told us it would be cold, the mist was the result of that weather prediction.
Cuando el camarote se llenó con la bruma quedé dormido. Al día siguiente, conforme el frío de la madrugaba apretaba, las ganas de orinar se hacían urgentes y desperté. La bruma había desaparecido y mis acompañantes también. Tembloroso por el frío salí al deck de la marina solo para darme cuenta que me encontraba solo. A pesar de mis gritos para llamar la atención, nadie apareció. Creo que me encontraba en otra dimensión.
When the cabin was filled with mist I fell asleep. The next day, as the early morning chill set in, the urge to urinate became urgent and I woke up. The mist was gone and so were my companions. Shivering from the cold, I went out on the deck of the marina just to realize that I was alone. In spite of my screams for attention, no one showed up. I think I was in another dimension.
