Another desert trip came up a couple weeks back and I failed to write about it. Going back through my photos, I came across that day and it brought back the memory. Not to mention, some rather epic photos.
My boss handles most of the work we have out there, but he has me cover from time to time. I've written at least one blog about it, though it's been a while.
Getting out to Imperial Desert from where we live is roughly a two-and-a-half hour drive. It's one thing to drive five hours for work, but they also begin at 3:00 in the morning. I have to be on the road by half past midnight to arrive on time.
Benefits Of The Early Morning Desert Hours
One benefit of working out there, besides avoiding the hotter part of the day, is the opportunity to capture the beauty of the land. You won't catch a sunrise like this living near our coastline.
Nor will you turn around to see a near full moon against the backdrop of the cement pump. As I zoomed in for a better view, it's apparent the moon is either full or not less than a day away.
Mountains To The Northeast
Above shows a hazy view of far off mountains as I turned to face Northeast. My route home from the job is due west, almost in the direction of the moon.
Just outside of El Centro, it takes about 40 minutes to get to base of the mountains on I-8. There's a wind farm there, and it was a good choice for a location. I can't remember making the drive when it wasn't windy.
It's a wind with enough force to blow your car around in a frightening manner. One second your in your lane and the next your half way into the lane next to you.
You try not to think of the dropoffs on the other side of the guardrails. And if you have to pass a Semi, better wait for the right moment and just go for it!!!
I do have to say, I'd rather drive through the nasty wind than into El Centro staring at that sun. There was one morning I dropped down the pass around 5:15 AM and right into the rising sun. Driving conditions were brutal even with sunglasses on.
This last trip went very well. Mostly because I was able to catch close to five hours of sleep before making the drive. When these jobs do come along, coffee and energy drinks are definitely my friends.
Thanks for reading and as always...
