There are so many sweet spots to enjoy a good meal on the Peninsula of the Cape, but as we left home and headed for a seaside mall that would have salty sea views on an extremely windy Monday evening, we decided to just drive a couple minutes further down the road. Being indoors would just not do!
So we drove the 2 more minutes and got to Simon’s Town. We are lucky to have this little Town only 20 minutes from our own little village of Kommetjie. And boy was it a good idea! The harbour of Simon’s Town is in a perfect wind shadow that gave us the most stunning evening as the sunset over the mountain behind us.
Along with the rest of the world, our restaurants are struggling so there are deals to be had wherever you turn. But first, a walk down the pier for a view of the bay. The small fishing boats all moored to our left in the shade of a waterside building, with the yachts moored ahead along floating jetty’s. We couldn’t have caught more beautiful light as we admired the old naval town harbour.
Then, time for dinner and although Bertha’s has been around forever, we have never actually had a meal here! It was pretty quiet as we took a table on the outdoor patio with a gorgeous view. You really can’t have a bad view in this area, everything is beautiful.
The deals on the food were pretty awesome! I ended up with a sirloin steak and rice with extra veg and Grant got the seafood (I hate seafood, so it’s never on our dinner menu at home).
It’s sad that these amazing restaurants have to struggle, but I am so thankful for the beautiful evening that we got to enjoy. We promised the waiter that we would bring our kids along next time - they would definitely liven the place up.
If you ever get to Cape Town then make sure to stop in at Bertha’s in Simon’s Town. They serve most of the regulars - grills, seafood, salads, yummy looking desserts and beer on tap. The staff were friendly and lovely and I want to go back again real soon.
But most of all, take in the amazing sights and sounds of the harbour town. Take the time to look up at the historic buildings and walk along the high street. Or hire a sea bike or a canoe and go for a paddle. It’s all there for the taking waiting for you.
Happy Valentines Day my love...
