In planting all the crops we wish to plant in our garden or farm. They're some of the crops that will love to stay on their own without attaching other crops to it why they're most that could be planted along with others. Planting of crops with other crops is known as mix cropping and this kind of planting are usually more convenient with vegetables and legume crops like melon can be planted along with Maize, Okra, and others.
Mix cropping is important to save more space for planting of other crops but we're not supposed to plant anyhow when planting for a mix cropping so all the crops will not die. I have washed a lot of people going into mix cropping without knowing the type of crops that can match others when mixed in a garden or farm.
If anyone wishes to go into mix cropping the farmer should be ready to study the crops she's about to plant together in one land space. The farmer should be able to understand if the soil has enough nutrients to accommodate much crops in one land space. If a farmer went ahead to go into mix cropping without studying the nature of the land, the different crops that'll be planted will all be struggling for nutrients from the soil and when this happens the different crops will not grow fine as it's supposed to be if it was planted alone. The struggle for survival of different crops planted together in one land may make many of them not to germinate and those that germinated may end up dieing.
To plant many crops in one land space known as mix cropping, the farmer should be able to know that when planting many crops in one land, there should all be planted with enough space from each other. Just like when you want to plant a melon, Okra, and maize in one land space. How I usually do it is to till the land as a small ridge, I'll then plant my maize at the top of the ridges. The number of maize space will be 2 while I will plant Okra in another 2 space all at the top of the small farm ridge. I will then plant my melon at the down area of the ridges. This is usually the best mix cropping methods that works for me.
Another thing I usually do when I go into mix cropping is to monitor the crops I planted as they grow. Because they're different crops, they need to be monitored to avoid them affecting others. I usually monitor the melon and give them a direction so they'll no coil on the maize or Okra stems ast thy grow.
Mix cropping need a manure because of the different crops planted together in one land space. I usually makes sure I pour enough bird or cow dumps to the land before I'll cultivate on the land. Even after I am done cultivating the land, I'll also apply more manure to the soil. This usually helps the crops to look fresh as they grow not minding they're planted along with other crops.
