It has actually been a while since I drop some of my homesteading posts here but today, we are going to be talking about some changes that usually occur with scent leaf growth and some of its dividends to humans. Do you know that scent leaf is among the common leaves in Africa that are mostly used for cooking and sometimes for herbal treatment mixing because of its high richness in calcium, vitamin A, iron, potassium, phosphorus, and many more?
Today, I woke up this morning and was wondering about some local rice that used to be cooked by my grandmother years ago. Whenever my grandmother cooks such rice, it’s always special because he will only have to use scent leaf, crayfish, magi, onion, pepper, salt, and red oil without attaching any other expensive ingredients. I used to enjoy the meal but one day, I asked her the reason behind the scent leaf constant use even for soup cooking. My mother told me that scent leaf is very medicinal for cooking especially for children because it helps to protect the body from malaria and typhoid, diarrhea, stomach pains, infections, and many more.
My grandmother also told me that why she also prefers using it for cooking is that it gives food a good taste and also as we keep eating scent leaves that it will be very difficult for us to encounter sickness and diseases.
To be honest with you, do you know that in those days when my grandmother used to cook with scent leaves and other minor ingredients that people used to look down on us as if we don’t have money to buy foodstuffs from the market but the truth is that I was enjoying the meal and at the same time booting my immune.
Come to think of it considering the health benefits of scent leaf, I told my wife that I would like to prepare some minor rice for the family before going to work. She was wondering why I suddenly decided to prepare this morning's meal. Well, just to help my body a little with scent leaf.
Observation from my scent leaf farm:
When I visited the farm where we planted the scent leaf from the little plot of land that was given to me by my neighbor I noticed that some of the scent leaves are looking fresh and green while some are a bit yellowish in color. I also noticed that the previous scent leaf that we planted in early January has started generating seeds and changing colors.
Do you know why some of the scented leaves on my farm is looking green; it’s because the plant leaf is still young and absorbs enough nutrients from the soil and photosynthesis.
Do you also know why some of the scent leaves are developing yellowish color, it’s because they are lacking nutrients from the soil and no adequate photosynthesis reaching them? When you notice such, you can apply some manure like animal dumps, and fertilizer under the root of the scent leaf to enable it to recover back.
Why some of the scent leaves started generating seeds because they are already old and ready to be removed and planted back through their seeds.
