Got the harvest done first thing yesterday morning and put the produce in the house. The cucumbers and tomatoes are about to really kick into gear in the next weeks.
Went out to haul in the garbage can and found this barn spider on the gate post.
It hides under the receiver for the gate remote and blends in nicely.
I had cleaned the patio but the Oregon grape had overgrown the end and had become a bit of a nuisance. I started cutting it out but had to stop to go to my chiro appointment.
I needed the adjustment in my mid back which felt much better afterwards.
When I got home the package was waiting in the box. Our new metal detector arrived and the boys went wild for it. I got it setup and showed them how to use it before they were outside roaming the yard.
I spent more time on the coop door code but THIS TIME I have it finally figured out. I have to have it check the ntp time at the end of the loop so it is always keeping the time correct. This morning it was exactly on time instead of 5 minutes off like before.
I kept at the removal and got it down to mainly roots.
That was when the huge pry bar came out and did its duty. Stupid roots just tangle up off a big tap root.
R did it! He found a relic! I looked it up and these old tokens were from the 1920s/30s from old gaming machines. The bar patrons would dump all their pennies and nickles into the machine and they would win these tokens which were just like the prize counter at the arcade. These were made in Chicago. It says "property of O.K. Vendor"
And on the other side says, "Loaned for amusement only". This one has the diamonds which makes it much more common. Still they can go for $10. Not bad for his first foray around the farm.
Much of the afternoon I heard the "BEEP BEEP BEEP" of the detector as he roamed.
The amaranth is seeding out in the garden, all volunteers from last year... I grabbed 3 tops and walked down to the creek area and spread the seeds everywhere. The stuff gets 8 feet tall, is quite nutritious, and created a wonderful late season screen for the road.
These minute poppy seed sized seeds turn into 8 foot monster plants.
I was on the patio looking to clean a bit more when I looked down in the gravel bucket to see the monster beetle stuck in it. There was a spider stuck as well that I got out.
Big ass beetle scratched its hid legs against its body to make a hissing sound.
Crazy big pincer jaws.
I touched the top of its head and the jaws close then open the same speed each time. About then one of the roosters wandered up and I threw the beetle into the yard and the rooster jumped on it and tore it apart.
@stryeyz was home from work a bit early and I was out in the pole garden pulling weeds and I threw a bunch of the fallen sunflowers into the sheep.
Sent the boys to look for eggs for dinner and turns out our duck managed to actually hatch out a duckling. Our ducks are 5+ years old and have managed 1 duckling aside from this one in all that time.... I will check and see if any more are going to hatch.
The freeze dryer finished the batch of potato slices. They came out wonderfully and will have to get mylar bagged today.
@stryeyz went to our friend's for the night to take her to surgery this morning so I soaked alone for a while then headed in for bed after dark.
Today I am going to work on packing for our trip up to Canada, will find a carry bag for the metal detector kit, get harvests done of which I have more cabbage to pick, check on the duckling, and I will make sure the farm is ready for potential rain this weekend.
