Did you notice that I have enjoyed several varieties of homemade foods? Very nutritious, rich, and healthy meals. It's such a pleasure and satisfaction to be able to enjoy the fruit of our harvest; moreover, we are able to prepare some local dishes that would otherwise have gone into extinction. Another benefit we enjoy is that these meals are so much cheaper compared to if we were to purchase these staples from the farm at this time of the year. Right after the time of harvest, prices of foodstuffs have continually gone so high that I'm so glad we have some foods in the reserve.
Guess what today I prepared some soy milk for the very first time. A friend of mine came around and was willing to teach me how to do this since I haven't done it before.
Our soya beans got really bad at harvest, and instead of harvesting about 50-100 kg, I barely got 3 kg.
Out of this, I took 2 tins of milk and proceeded to make soy milk.
- First I soaked the soybeans in water for about an hour.
- Next I peeled the back by first pounding it in water and then squeezing it to remove the peels.
- It was then properly washed and taken to the mill.
- After smooth milling, I added enough water and sieved this.
Next I started cooking it over the hot plate and removing some lumps of the soybeans from above the milk. When it was properly cooked, I allowed it to cool down.
This morning, I'm having a breakfast of soy milk and some doughnuts.
My friend couldn't wait to see me till the end of the process as she had an impromptu engagement and left. Nevertheless, she told me what to do, and I can assume that I have prepared a quality soy milk this morning.
Soy milk is one of the best milks you can give to your infants. My mother has often fed us with soya powder as infants; it makes babies out in healthy weight in the shortest possible time. There is a local method she uses in producing the powder, and in my subsequent blogs, you will see another method of how we can prepare the soy milk into powder for consumption.
The only challenge with keeping soy milk is that I have to finish up all that was prepared in one day, as the milk does not often last long on its own unless it is refrigerated. Not having a freezer at home is a disadvantage for me.
