Hello Hive
It has been some hours of work on the farm today already And just like I said last week we have fully commenced the planting of our rice.
We woke up pretty early and having checked out my blog and some basic house chores we headed to the farm with both hired workers and friends who volunteered to join us with the work.
The rain has ceased for about 2 weeks now hence the ground is dried although we were able to plant the nuts while the ground was still wet.
It had been a laborious activities all day and you will get to see the works we have done here in subsequent blogs.
For today I want to show us the last of our Germinating peanuts, these are the ones we have planted last as timing is often essence while growing and crop The peanuts we have planted in the month of June are already at flowering stages while these ones are barely two weeks old and just germinating. The best time for planting of peanuts based on our weather here is in the months of June through to mid July. It is not advisable to plant any more peanut grains once the month of July is coming to a close.
Within this period, quality amount of rainfall is often experienced. Not too much too to hinder germination or growth of any crops.
Well drained sandy-loam soil is often preferable for growing groundnuts. The grains are able to penetrate the soil well like other tuber crops. Clay soil often compact and not suitable
Groundnuts as Nitrogen fixers do not need fertilizer and proper care would be giving to our crops soon as they germinate.
For this part of our Peanuts the labourers didn't cultivate the land properly, grasses weren't properly turned over and now we have grasses germinating almost along side the nuts. Weeding will be done in at least 3weeks from now.
We often cross check every nuts after planting to be sure that a good percentage of our grains germinated. If we have missing grains that do not germinate we go ahead to replace them instead if leaving open gaps in the field.
