Hello Hive
Palm fruits, dates and some other related crops of these species can first grow in nursery.
It was an interesting experience yesterday when I stumbled upon this upcoming palm fruit seedlings plantation.
One thing I have always desired is to grow my agricultural experience and exercise from just farming food crops to cash crops. With food crops we have only been able to grow what we eat repeating the same process yearly. This isn't profitable at all, while in some years the food crops will produce well, some other years they don't get to produce well such that we have to source for additional food from the market when what we have grown won't be enough to feed the family for a year.
Over the years Nigerian farmers have abandoned growing of different cash crops from cocoa to Palm fruits and other edible fruit trees. While many of our grandparents who are into those activities have passed away, the current generation having adopted farming that much.
The availability of cash crops such as Palm fruits has been on the decline for a good while now. With education farming is made easier and less difficult, different new approach to cultivation of land and planting of seeds can now be adopted. With the Advent of these new techno and how that farming can now be possible with less labour and so much ease, anyone like myself can be interested in farming adventures of different kinds
Yesterday I was exposed to the palm plantation where some palm seedlings have been grown from the seeds and are being prepared for transplanting to the main farm.
Here I got to learn about how one can get started in growing Palm fruits, how to germinate the seeds which looks a little technical. We have to mimic the natural elements and provide an environment that suits the germination of seeds in other for the seeds to be sprouted.
Leaning about the cultivation process of a palm fruit plantation, transferring of the seeds to the field and how to nurture the plants to maturity before the production of fruits and when harvest can commence. There is a whole lot to do and learn but all of these will be useful when eventually I get to have the capacity and finances it takes to start some plantation farmings in various crops.
