Hello Hivers!!
Welcome to my blog..
So,It turns out that the black soldier fly larvae (bsf) I recently got from a local breeder had some pre- pupae in it.
Pre-pupae is the stage of the black soldier fly larvae where it turns black or brown in colour and doesn’t consume any more organic waste, this is in preparation for the pupation stage.
When it changes to the pupae stage, it dosen’t move or eat no more.
So, at the pre-pupae stage, it needs a certain environmental conditions to help it pupate and then turns to the black soldier fly in some weeks, but it can not get that ideal environmental conditions when it is still in the same bin with the other lavea that are still consuming organic waste.
The black soldier fly larvae consumes it organic waste at a very high temperature, which can be as high as 33°c which is not suitable for the pre-pupae,
so it will have to look for a way to crawl out of the bin, and at this point of pre-pupae, the mouth part of the larvae has been modified to a hook-like part which will aid them to crawl out of the bin with ease and self sort.
At this point the pre-pupae will self sort themselves out of the bin to find a more cooler place to pupate..
So, it is advisable to put a bigger container under the container that holds the larvae, so the pre-pupae will self-sort (crawl) into the bigger container.
But in my case in didn’t use that method, what I did was to put the container into the love cage net, were if the pre-pupae self sort (crawl out), there will still be I side the net, so I will just pick them to a separate container.
In my case I prefer a Carton cause for the pre-pupae to pupate well, it needs a dry and cool environment with a stable temperature and a dark place which a carton can provide that..
When the pupae starts it's pupation to turn into fly the end of the pupae bends a little showing that it has enter it pupation stage and shouldn't be disturbed!!
So, I put them all in there to metamorphose and change to Flies…
