When I started high school, I remember having my first migraine episode so bad that I had an unbearable headache for days. Out of habit, the first thing I do is ask what to take, because it was a bad pain and I didn't know why, so my mom gave me a fairly strong acetaminophen pill in milligrams, which calmed me down seconds after I took it. So the relief was total, so from then on, every time I had this feeling of pain, I did not hesitate to take a pill, but then one was no longer enough, but two and, as time went by, I resorted to higher doses, which led me to the fact that currently a headache is not calmed by a normal pill, but by a whole ritual of looking for what medicine calms my feeling of anguish for not calming a discomfort…
It took me years to be able to understand what a migraine was, some of its causes and that, without knowing, I began a chain of self-medication that made my body unable to remove a simple pain or discomfort with a small dose and not only with the migraine, but with other ailments such as a simple stomach ache, which an ibuprofen should be able to counteract; I use up to 2 of 800 mg and so, why and how does this happen?
For this I will address 3 factors, based on what I believe to be "habit", "conformity" and the lack of intention for a medical diagnosis; and for each of these I will give my lived experiences to make them better understood.
Habit:
We are attached to the idea that most ailments are always solved with a pill, that we simply adapt to this and it is not something new; this comes from family customs, something like "if it took away a pain for me, it will also take away yours even if it is not the same." We falsely believe that all types of conditions and ailments are calmed with the same things and this is not the case, and this is where a problem arises, since we pass these beliefs on to children, grandchildren and other descendants, so we impart an upbringing where we will always do the same actions regarding what is health.In my case, it happens like this: the subject of migraine was treated in front of my family as a simple strong headache, something that continues to happen and affects not only me, who is the one who suffers from it, but also those around me, since the belief that migraine does not exist or that many families have the habit of not opening their minds to various conditions that exist makes us treat them incorrectly every time they appear.
One of the causes of migraine is stress. Now imagine that this same thing appears every time a family member, for example, my mother, has a clear and marked episode of migraine and, no matter how much I try to advise, it simply continues to be taken as something else and treated differently. Therefore, it is bad for her because it causes her to be treated badly and can bring other ailments and it generates more stress for me; Therefore, these migraines appear more often. Therefore, breaking with this continuous pattern of teaching and opening the mind to the fact that there are more types of conditions, ailments and diagnoses is something that would eliminate the risk of developing disorders or dangers due to the way in which we treat and approach our health and how responsible we are with the use of medications.
Conformism:
this is precisely what leads to falling into this constant of self-medication or not, when we simply follow what works for someone else beyond really worrying about whether taking a pill will bring us some side effect before we are cured or if its excessive use will bring consequences, even stopping to ask ourselves if what we are experiencing is really a normal condition, especially not keeping quiet for fear of making a mistake or being misjudged for a health issue.And in my case it was not only with migraines, but with a toothache that yes, certainly was and still is unbearable, but the way to calm it in the first instance was to take a pill that was for pain, beyond focusing on whether or not it was specifically for that, and it led me to then conform and that when buying several of these, but from different laboratories, I developed a reaction to one of these, so it was more than a lesson learned.
Lack of intention to get a medical diagnosis:
the fear of many people to go to a consultation or to see a health specialist is something that the vast majority have and I include myself. That position that we adopt of avoiding asking about an ailment for fear of the diagnosis or thinking that going will mean leaving with a thousand negative things is something that keeps us from knowing more about our body and, by inertia, self-medicating without knowing.In my case, almost all my family tends to have that fear of going even to a check-up. Little by little I have been able to let go of this, from taking advantage of any activity where they provide care and going to consult to researching about the human body to inform myself and fill myself with knowledge, which makes my fear decrease more and more.
And precisely with my migraine, it is mostly on the part of my parents to take this as a normal pain or pretend that such a thing does not exist, together with ADHD and others, which becomes a cycle in which, by not taking me to get checked for this, self-medication takes over and therefore this is transmitted to the person who suffers, in my case, making it difficult to go to a doctor, seriously affecting me and thus not having the appropriate treatment.
So, taking these factors into account, both our upbringing and our own judgment are what lead to this behavior. I'm not saying that taking a pill for an ailment is wrong, but taking it continuously, until it no longer causes the right sensation or effect, is something that we should take as a red alert, and in my case, it has been like that, so I have treated each symptom little by little and with more responsibility, and as for migraines, knowing how to identify what causes them and how to act in response to them.

Cuando comencé la secundaria, recuerdo haber tenido mi primer episodio de migraña tan fuerte que estuve días con un dolor de cabeza insoportable. Por costumbre, lo primero en hacer es preguntar qué tomar, porque era un dolor fuerte y no sabía por qué, por lo que mi mamá me dio una pastilla de acetaminofén bastante fuerte en miligramos, lo cual calmó a segundos después de haberla tomado. Por lo que el alivio fue total, por lo que desde entonces, cada que tenía esta sensación de dolor, no dudaba en tomar una pastilla, pero luego una ya no era suficiente, sino dos y, a medida que pasaba el tiempo, recurría a dosis más altas, lo que me llevó a que actualmente un dolor de cabeza no se me calme con una pastilla normal, sino con todo un ritual de buscar qué medicamento me calma la sensación de angustia por no calmar un malestar…
Me tomó años poder entender lo que era una migraña, algunas de las causas de esta y que, sin saber, comencé una cadena de automedicación que hizo que cada vez mi cuerpo no pudiera quitar un dolor simple o un malestar con una pequeña dosis y no solo con la migraña, sino con otras dolencias como lo es un simple dolor de vientre, con el que un ibuprofeno debería poder contrarrestar; yo ocupo hasta 2 de 800mg y entonces, ¿por qué y cómo pasa esto?
Para esto abordaré 3 factores, en base a lo que creo que serían "la costumbre", "el conformismo" y la falta de intención por un diagnóstico médico; y a cada una de estas les daré mis experiencias vividas para así darlas a entender mejor.
La costumbre:
Estamos apegados a que siempre la mayoría de dolencias se solucionen con una pastilla, que simplemente nos adaptamos a esto y no es algo nuevo; esto viene de costumbres de familia, algo como "si a mí me quitó un dolor, a ti también aunque no sea el mismo". Falsamente creemos que todo tipo de afecciones y dolencias se calman con las mismas cosas y no es así, y acá es donde surge un problema, ya que pasamos estas creencias a hijos, nietos y demás descendencias, por lo que impartimos una crianza donde siempre haremos las mismas acciones en cuanto a lo que es la salud.En mi caso, pasa así: el tema de la migraña fue tratado ante mi familia como un simple dolor de cabeza fuerte, cosa que sigue pasando y afecta mucho no solo a mí, que soy quien la padezco, sino a mi entorno, ya que la creencia de que la migraña no existe o que muchas familias tienen la costumbre de no abrir la mente ante diversas afecciones que existen hace que tratemos de forma errónea estas cada que aparecen.
Una de las causas de la migraña es el estrés. Ahora imaginen que este mismo aparece cada que un familiar, por ejemplo, mi mamá, tiene un claro y marcado episodio de migraña y, por más que trato de aconsejar, simplemente sigue siendo tomado como otra cosa y tratado diferente. Por ende, es malo para ella porque causa que sea tratado mal y pueda traer otras dolencias y a mí genera más estrés; por ende aparecen más seguido estas migrañas.Por lo que si romper con ese patrón continuo de enseñanza y abrir la mente a que hay más tipos de afecciones, dolencias y diagnósticos es algo que quitaría ese riesgo de desarrollar trastornos o peligros a causa de la manera en la que tratamos y abordamos nuestra salud y qué tan responsables somos con el uso de los medicamentos.
El conformismo:
Esto es justamente lo que da paso a caer en esta constante de automedicación o no, cuando simplemente seguimos lo que le funciona a otro más allá de realmente preocuparnos por si el tomar una pastilla nos traerá algún efecto secundario antes de curarnos o si su uso excesivo traerá consecuencias, incluso el detenernos a preguntarnos a nosotros mismos si realmente lo que nos pasa es una afección normal, sobre todo el no callarnos ante el temor de equivocarnos o ser mal juzgados por un tema de salud.Y en mi caso no solo fue con las migrañas, sino con un dolor de muela que sí, ciertamente era y aún es insoportable, pero la forma de calmarlo en primera instancia fue tomar una pastilla que fuera para dolor, más allá de enfocarme si era o no específicamente para eso, y me llevó a luego conformarme y que al comprar varias de estas, pero de diferentes laboratorios, desarrollara una reacción a una de estas, por lo que fue más que una lección aprendida.
Falta de intención por un diagnóstico médico:
El miedo de muchos por ir a una consulta o atenderse con un especialista en la salud es algo que la gran mayoría poseen y donde hasta yo me incluyo. Esa posición que adoptamos de evitar preguntar sobre un malestar por miedo al diagnóstico o pensar que ir será salir con mil cosas negativas es algo que nos aleja de justamente conocer más sobre nuestro cuerpo y, por inercia, automedicarnos sin saber.En mi caso, casi toda mi familia suele tener ese miedo por ir incluso a un chequeo. Yo poco a poco he podido soltar esto, desde aprovechar cualquier actividad donde brinden atención e ir a consultar hasta investigar sobre el cuerpo humano para ir informándome y llenándome de conocimientos, cosa que hace que mi miedo baje cada vez más .
Y justamente con mi migraña, es más que todo por parte de mis padres el tomar esto como un dolor normal o hacer que no existe tal cosa, en conjunto con el TDAH y demás, lo que se vuelve un ciclo en el que, por no llevarme a checar por esto, la automedicación toma el papel y por ende se transmite esto a la persona que padece, en mi caso, siendo complicado ir a un médico, afectando gravemente y así no teniendo el tratamiento adecuado.
Entonces, teniendo estos factores en cuenta, tanto la crianza como nuestro propio juicio son los que propician esta conducta. No digo que tomar una pastilla para un malestar esté mal, pero de manera continua, que ya no cause la sensación o efecto adecuado, ya es algo que debemos de tener como una alerta roja y, en mi caso, ha sido así, por lo que he tratado poco a poco y ya con más responsabilidad cada síntoma y, en cuanto a las migrañas, saber identificar el que las causa y cómo actuar ante esta.
