What is more important between health and finance? I know most people will say that health is most important, as finance is useless if we are not healthy, but most people's actions say the opposite. I think we value so much about finance that we forget about our health, and one of the best examples is self-medication.
Self-medication is not harmful when we apply it for minor issues like normal cough, fever, and pain, as for such a thing, we don't need to use powerful drugs. We don't bother doctors for silly things like that, and it's understandable because we want to save money for our future. Moreover, doctors give us so many tests that make us afraid, which can be a double financial blow. As long as the issue is little, I can understand it, but some of us cross the limit and bring trouble for ourselves.
Many of us take drugs that the doctor suggested for another patient for a specific problem. Such a thing can be very risky, as the situation of each patient can be different. It can affect our health by damaging organs. Even it may cost our lives if we are not lucky. Unfortunately, many of us think about our health as the experimental subject and apply different drugs, which is not wise.
I got good genes from my parents, and my immune system is quite powerful. So, I get sick in rare cases, and so I don't need to take medicine as I am healthy in maximum time. There was no chance of practicing self-medication in my case. But I recommend others not practice self-medication, as it's very risky. My mother tried to practice it sometimes, but I never allowed her to do it. Each time a new drug is taken, it must be recommended by doctors, not by the relatives who became well after taking it. I can't let my mother take such a risk.
Once one of my relatives figured out that her blood pressure remained high most of the time, it was easy to understand she had a high BP issue. So, she needed to take medicine to stabilize her blood pressure within the standard level. Rather than talking with a doctor, she asked about it from others who were patients with high BP. After collecting the name of the medicine, she did some online research also based on her knowledge. She started to take medicine, and within a few days, she became weak, and many times, she felt dizzy. She never doubted the medicine and continued taking it, but one day, she became senseless, and her family member admitted her to the hospital.
At that time, the BP of that woman was very low, and later, the doctor said that the woman taking the medicine was not ok because the medicine was very powerful compared to what she needed to take. It was the reason for the dropping of her BP, feeling weak and dizzy. Everyone scolded her for taking such a kind of foolish action. I think it could be deadly, considering the overall situation. She would talk with a doctor in such a sensitive case. At least she would not suffer for it.
It was just a simple real-life example of how risky self-medication can be. Luckily, the woman didn't lose her life, but everyone won't be lucky like her to receive timely treatment. So, it's better to stop practicing self-medication when the problem is not simple. Health should not be traded with it.
