Spurs were lucky to escape with a win in the EFL cup midweek which would probably be the low point under the Ange Postecoglou era at Spurs. Those of you that are not Tottenham fans will not remember getting knocked out by Fulham in last years EFL cup 4th round on penalties. Ange made 9 changes to his side that night and it was one of the only mistakes in his early tenure. So he needed to get it right this year. But Ange being Ange made 8 changes to the team. Spurs were woeful mainly down to the fact that the team were not used to playing with each other and the big players were being rested. It took a Werner injury and Kulusevski and Maddison to come on to start playing football. Granted Bergval did not do too bad on his full debut but there needed to be senior players to get the game over the line.Spence who was surprisingly not starting got the equaliser in the dying embers and then Johnson who came off social media because our own fans were abusing him , scored a nice little dink as the second giving him some much needed confidence. Spurs dodged a bullet but we are through. It was Brentford then in the league on Saaturday afternoon. Pep had spent a few minutes bigging up how good the Bee's were had Spurs fans a bit nervous. And then within the first minute Fantasy Football stalwart Mbeumo scored a screamer from the edge of the box. Not a good start by all accounts. After this however Spurs got into their stride and it was their best display in a long time. Now I will say that with an asteriks as Spurs have been playing very well all season. It is just we could not convert our chances. This looked to be dispeled when Solanke scored the equaliser in the 8th minute to calm everyone down. 1-1 with 80 minutes to go. Spurs were all over them. Johnson scored a beauty on the 28th minute which put us in the lead. 2-1 is a terrible lead for Tottenham however and we always bite our nails until we score another and put it to bed. Too many time we have finished in a draw and for a game like this we should be really killing teams off. This happened when Bissouma won a tackle at the each of our box. Passed to Romero who sent Sonny running. Sonny laid it up for Maddison to finish brilliantly. I was highly critical of Madders last week after he hugged Arteta. One can only take a look at Haaland this weekend giving legohead guff. That's what I want to see. No friends here. Spurs were too busy hugging the Arsenal players to realise we were in a derby. There is no love lost with Arsenal and City and it is good to see. James played well yesterday but has a long way to go now to keep being consistency.
It was nice to see Solanke off the mark as well and he is only going to get better. I liked his running and pressing which is the primary reason we looked at him over Ivan Toney. Solanke can run all day and he is crucial for the press. He was once a part of the famous Liverpool press but he could not take the place of Salah , Mane or Firminho which is fair enough. He revitalised his career at Bournemouth and now he is looking to push forward with Spurs to a new level. This guy is going to get plenty of goals for us this season by the way we are playing. Shout out to Bentancur as well for having his best game in a long time. Bissouma has to fight now to get his place which is rightly so.
We move on to FK Qarabag this Thursday and I predict Ange will make changes but not as much as the cup game. He will play Vicario in goal. There will be less changes but a few non the less. He has one eye on Man United on Sunday. Anything but a victory in both games will be disappointing.
