Hi Everyone
Well these topic is quiet intriguing and touching because I'm a student and I'll be approaching this topic with experience because truthfully the education sector in Nigeria needs serious revamping.
What would you change about your country's education system?
Talking about the education system in my country, I'd want to shake things up in some big ways these include upgrading poor learning facilities, addressing corruption amongst lecturers, putting an end to unnecessary money demands for irrelevant things like materials and unfair fees payment, providing good and free transportation for students, and addressing the issue of too many irrelevant subjects being offered which might hinder students thinking outside the box.
Here's a detailed explanation of the things I listed above:
I'd change the poor state of learning facilities because students deserve decent classrooms, libraries, labs, and spaces that spark learning. Cramped, dirty, or lacking facilities hinder growth and proper or active learning; it makes learning exhausting and uninteresting.
Tackling corruption amongst lecturers is a must because trust is key in education. When there's corruption like demanding bribes for grades, male lecturers assaulting female students, unnecessary withholding of results for selfish or personal reasons, using their textbook to determine a student's grade(i.e no buying of textbook no CA or Exam), etc all these undermine fairness and learning and make life unbearable for students on campuses.
Cutting out unnecessary demands for money for things that don't add value to learning is also very crucial because it's putting the students under serious pressure, which also in turn affects the parents directly or indirectly, especially those from a minimal background where finance is a challenge. Students should be allowed to focus on studying, not stressing over irrelevant fees.
Good and free means of transportation for all students would be a game-changer. Getting to school shouldn't be a hassle, allowing students to focus on their studies, attend classes on time, and always.
Do you think there are some subjects that aren't relevant to adulthood?
I think some subjects aren't super relevant to adulthood or might limit the ability to think outside the box because they're not practical or career-focused enough. For example teaching puberty in a tertiary institution sounds improper , that's something for younger kids; the focus at that level should be on advanced, career-specific learning.
Which subjects should be taught because every adult needs to know this information?
I'd encourage focusing on career core courses so people can deal well with their discipline. In terms of subjects every adult needs to know, financial literacy is crucial for managing money, critical thinking and problem-solving help navigate life's challenges, communication skills are vital for expressing ideas clearly in any career, health education should be taught intensively so as fo ensure overall wellbeing awareness and digital literacy's a must since tech's everywhere.
