Responder siendo hombre quien hace muchos años dejó de ser hijo, hoy como padre y esposo, es difícil ser objetivo. No quiero caer en retórica de afirmar si papá fue «bueno o malo», que «fue el mejor papá del mundo».
Para responder a la interrogante: «¿qué me enseñó papá?», empecemos por decir que mi papá en vida respondía al nombre de Aparicio. Nació en Monte Carmelo-Cordero, en el Estado Táchira. Su juventud fue dura, vivió la época de la II Guerra mundial y prestó Servicio Militar (2 años) durante el mandata de Pérez Jiménez. Fue un hombre rudo, de carácter fuerte. «Hombre de pocas palabras», pero de acciones nobles y comentarios acertados.
A papá le encantaba el Whisky Johnnie Walker, en particular Red Label, ya que para él era un whisky escocés Blender que ofrece un sabor suave y equilibrado. Siempre tomaba una copa mientras fumaba su puro (tabaco) La Cumanesa (Anilla Blanca).
Con esta pequeña descripción, ya podrán disponer de un perfil objetivo de mi papá, ahora ya dispongo de su atención para esbozarles las enseñanzas que me dejó y que trasmito día a día a mi hijo Matthew.
«Hoy te voy a enseñar las lecciones más importantes de la vida. No se trata solo de tener hijos; se trata de ser una buena persona», me decía…
El Trabajo es la base del éxito
Papá tomaba un tosco trozo de madera y me lo entregaba. «Siente la textura de esta madera», decía. «La vida es como este trozo de madera, está en bruto, sin forma. Pero con trabajo duro, dedicación y paciencia, podemos transformarla en algo hermoso».
La Honestidad es el pegamento que mantiene todo unido
Papá me mostraba un frasco de pegamento. «¿Ves este pegamento? Une las piezas, haciéndolas más fuertes. La honestidad es como ese pegamento. Sé siempre sincero, incluso cuando sea difícil. Las mentiras debilitan los lazos de confianza».
El Respeto fomenta las relaciones
Papá me acercaba a la ventana, por donde pasaban los vecinos. «Respeta a todos, hijo. Trata a los demás como te gustaría que te trataran a ti. Ya sean ricos o pobres, jóvenes o viejos, muestra bondad».
La Gratitud, apreciar las bendiciones de la vida
Papá cogía una olla finamente pulida. «En esta olla se hace la comida, sustento. Nunca olvides estar agradecido por lo que tienes. Expresa gratitud a los demás y tu corazón se desbordará».
La Empatía, comprender las luchas de los demás
Papá hacía una pausa y me señalaba las colinas distantes. «La empatía, Zonder, es la capacidad de sentir lo que sienten los demás. Cuando alguien está sufriendo, ofrécele una mano. La compasión nos hace verdaderamente humanos».
Con el paso de los años, me he convertido en un hábil replicador de las enseñanzas de papá. Haga lo que haga, recuerdo siempre las lecciones de papá. Pero lo más importante es que papá me convirtió en un hombre íntegro, respetado por todos los que han conocido.
Papá no solo trabajó para que comiéramos y vistiéramos. Él siempre pensó en el mañana. Si la cuenta no me falla, mis padres vivieron juntos cincuenta años (toda una vida) y hoy, sus tres hijos varones vivimos la vida con base en las enseñanzas recibidas por papá y mamá. Quizá suene cursi, pero «honramos la memoria de nuestros padres…»

To answer the question: ‘what did dad teach me?’, let's start by saying that my dad in life was called Aparicio. He was born in Monte Carmelo-Cordero, in the state of Táchira. His youth was hard, he lived through the Second World War and did military service (2 years) during the mandate of Pérez Jiménez. He was a tough man with a strong character. **He was a man of few words, but of noble actions and wise comments.
Dad loved Johnnie Walker Whisky, in particular Red Label, as for him, it was a Blender Scotch whisky that offered a smooth and balanced flavour. He always had a dram while smoking his La Cumanesa (White Ring) cigar.
With this short description, you now have an objective profile of my dad, and I now have your attention to outline the lessons he left me and that I pass on to my son Matthew every day.
“Today I am going to teach you the most important lessons in life. It’s not just about having children; it’s about being a good person”, he told me…
Work is the basis of success
Dad would take a rough piece of wood and hand it to me. “Feel the texture of this wood”, he said. “Life is like this piece of wood, it is raw, without form. But with hard work, dedication and patience, we can transform it into something beautiful”.
Honesty is the glue that holds everything together
Dad showed me a bottle of glue. “Do you see this glue? Join the pieces, making them stronger. Honesty is like that glue. Always be honest, even when it is difficult. Lies weaken bonds of trust”.
Respect fosters relationships
Dad would bring me closer to the window, where the neighbors were passing by. “Respect everyone, son. Treat others as you would like to be treated. Whether they are rich or poor, young or old, show kindness”.
Gratitude, appreciating the blessings of life
Dad took a finely polished pot. “In this pot food is made, sustenance. Never forget to be grateful for what you have. Express gratitude to others and your heart will overflow”.
Empathy, understanding the struggles of others
Dad would pause and point to the distant hills. “Empathy, Zonder, is the ability to feel what others feel. When someone is suffering, offer them a hand. Compassion makes us truly human”.
Over the years, I have become a skilled replicator of Dad’s teachings. Whatever I do, I always remember Dad’s lessons. But the most important thing is that Dad turned me into a man of integrity, respected by everyone he has ever met.
Dad didn’t just work so we could eat and dress. He always thought about tomorrow. If I count correctly, my parents lived together for fifty years (a whole life) and today, their three sons live life based on the teachings received by dad and mom. It may sound corny, but “we honor the memory of our parents…”
