This is back in 2019, I met Meera, her elder son Raju and younger one Rahul at the ghaat of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Prayagraj was earlier known by the name of Allahabad for Kumbh Mela. Meera was a young girl, she had her first child at the age of 18. In search of livelihood she came to Prayagraj, just like many other villagers who are living in or around different parts of Uttar Pradesh migrate them
selves.
Meera sells garlands, holy water ‘’Ganga jal’’ at the ghaat. Prayagraj is known for religious ceremonies at the confluence of holy river Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Sarasvati. Devotees come here to the confluence to perform religious rituals.
These religious practices along the river sides helps many migrants like Meera to earn their bread and butter. However, with the increase in water pollution and lack of responsibilities from the devotees the number of local sellers like Meera has decreased as she shared.
Meera dream of a better life for her children and educate them. So that they don’t have to compromise their childhood and future. A very beautiful message that Meera gives to her customers is not to throw the garlands and other offerings in water and respect the holy rivers.
