Friday fishermen in Gigieng village, Simpang Tiga sub-district, Pidie district, Aceh. The taboo not to go to sea in the village has been in effect since Islam entered Aceh. This taboo does not only apply to fishermen, but also to farmers. Fishermen are allowed to go to sea again after Friday prayers, as well as residents whose profession is farming.
Especially for fishermen, when entering Friday, precisely on Thursday afternoon, fishing boats returned from picking up fish parked in Kuala Gigieng and the fishermen would return to sea after Friday prayers.
The villagers strictly adhere to the taboo on fishing on Fridays. According to some residents of Gigieng village, Friday is a special day for Muslims around the world, especially in Gigieng village, so we have to respect it, especially on Thursday night there is a recitation held at a place of worship in the village.
