When you think of Japan, you don't necessarily think of the world of animals, but rather of modern, bustling cities and high technology. But alongside a loud modernity and a deep past, nature has a place too, and most of us quickly think of the famous Mount Fuji, which has itself become a Japanese icon.
But animals? Some of you may be aware that there are wild monkeys in Japan. There are also quite a few wild bears in the northern part of the country. Otherwise, many people are rather unfamiliar with Japan's fauna, which is not necessarily a lack of knowledge.
For example, not even all Japanese are aware that many years ago there were elephants roaming the forests of the island kingdom. Unfortunately, the time of the big thick-skinned animals is long gone, but they have left their traces here and there, which cannot be overlooked.
I met them in Nojiri-ko, a lake in the north of Nagano Prefecture. There, elephant bones and fossils were found some time ago, which, as it turned out, belong to the elephant species Palaeoloxodon naumanni. The German geologist Heinrich Edmund Naumann was the first to describe remains of this species at the end of the 19th century, whereupon they were later named after him, hence the other name Naumann Elephant.
This species became extinct around 24,000 years ago, so unfortunately there are no real elephants to admire here today. But there is at least an elephant museum where you can find the remains of these elephants as well as other animal species that once roamed the forests of the Japanese archipelago. Many thousands of years ago, Japan's animal world was probably much more diverse than it is today.
So don't be surprised if during your trip to Japan you suddenly find yourself standing in front of an elephant statue. You are still in the right place and should not miss the chance to learn something new and interesting about the land of the rising sun right here. With this knowledge, you might be able to make quite a big impression later on....

Wenn man an Japan denkt, denkt man nicht unbedingt an die Welt der Tiere, sondern eher an moderne und wuselige Städte und Hochtechnologie. Aber neben Moderne und Vergangenheit hat auch die Natur ihren Platz, und da kommt den meisten von uns dann schnell der berühmte Berg Fuji in den Sinn, der es selber auch schon zu einer japanischen Ikone geschafft hat.
Aber Tiere? Dass es in Japan wilder Affe gibt, könnte dem einen oder anderen vielleicht bekannt sein. Zusätzlich gibt es auch im nördlicheren Teil des Landes eine ganze Menge an wilden Bären. Ansonsten ist vielen Menschen die Fauna Japans eher unbekannt, was man nicht unbedingt als Wissenslücke auslegen muss.
Auch nicht allen Japanern ist zum Beispiel bekannt, dass vor vielen Jahren einmal Elefanten durch die Wälder des Inselreiches streiften. Die Zeit der großen Dickhäuter ist leider schon lange vorbei, aber sie haben hier und dort ihre Spuren hinterlassen, die nicht zu übersehen sind.
Ich bin ihnen in Nojiri-ko begegnet, an einem See im Norden der Präfektur Nagano. Dort wurden vor einiger Zeit Elefantenknochen und Fossile gefunden, welche, wie es sich herausstellte, zur Elefantenart Palaeoloxodon naumanni gehören. Ihr seid hier weiterhin genau richtig und sollte euch die Chance nicht entgehen lassen, genau hier an dieser Stelle etwas Neues und Interessantes über das Land der aufgehenden Sonne zu lernen. Mit diesem Wissen könnt ihr später vielleicht ganz groß auftrumpfen....
