Japanese architecture is fascinating not only in the construction of houses, but also in gardens and parks, where you can discover many elements and details. The Komainu, the Japanese lion dog, and also the stone lanterns, called Toro, are particularly striking. The Komainu is usually found on the grounds of almost all shrines and temples, where they are meant to keep away evil spirits and protect the place and visitors. The toro, on the other hand, can also be found in public and even private gardens, as they have become a central element of Japanese garden culture. In different sizes and designs they provide the special touch and the special feeling for the already very soulful gardens.
But even in the middle of the forest you can encounter Toro and Komainu. At least if there is a shrine nearby, which was the case during one of our little hikes. Already here, one or two kilometers away from the actual destination, the hiker is greeted and welcomed. But from this point there will be a watchful eye on you, and you can go on your way with peace of mind. But if you go on, you should know that you yourself are also under observation, and that the Komainu seems to see everything.
Now in the summer we are not quite as much on the go as we were in the spring, but as soon as the weather becomes a bit more pleasant, we will set out again to explore exactly such places and paths. Although I still want to enjoy the warm season too, and especially I want to go to the beach a few more times, I'm already looking forward to the cooling coming in autumn. But probably I will also pass some Komainu during the summer. I will greet them from you....

Japanische Architektur fasziniert nicht nur beim Hausbau, sondern auch in Gärten und Parks, in den man viele Elemente und Details entdecken kann. Auffallen tun insbesondere der Komainu, der Japanische Löwenhund, und auch die steinernen Laternen, Toro genannt. Den Komainu findet man meistens auf dem Gelände fast aller Schrein- und Tempelanlagen, wo sie dazu bestimmt sind, die bösen Geister fernzuhalten und Ort und Besucher zu beschützen. Die Toro kann man dagegen auch oft in öffentlichen und auch privaten Gärten antreffen, sind sie doch zu einem zentralen Element der japanischen Gartenbaukunst geworden. In verschiedenen Größen und Designs sorgen sie für den besonderen Touch und das besondere Gefühl bei den ja doch auch so schon immer sehr gefühlvollen Gartenanlagen.
Aber auch mitten im Wald kann man Toro und Komainu begegnen. Zumindest wenn ein Schrein in der Nähe sein sollte, was bei unserer kleinen Wanderung der Fall gewesen ist. Schon hier, ein oder zwei Kilometer vom eigentlichen Ziel entfernt, wird der Wanderer gegrüßt und willkommen gehießen. Aber hier wird auf ihn ein wachsames Auge geworfen, und man darf sich beruhigt auf seinen Weg machen. Wer weitergeht sollte aber auch wissen, dass man selber auch unter Beobachtung steht, und dass der Komainu alles zu sehen zu scheint.
Jetzt im Sommer sind wir zwar nicht ganz so viel unterwegs wie noch im Frühling, aber sobald das Wetter wieder etwas angenehmer wird, werden wir uns wieder aufmachen, um genau solche Orte und Pfade zu erkunden. Auch wenn ich die warme Jahreszeit noch ein wenig genießen möchte, und insbesondere auch noch einige Male an den Strand will, freue ich mich doch schon auf die im Herbst anstehende Abkühlung. Aber wahrscheinlich werde ich auch im Sommer noch an einigen Komainu vorbeikommen. Ich werde sie von euch grüßen...
