Caribou are members of the deer family. In Europe they are sometimes called reindeer. Larger than a deer and smaller than a moose, their thicker coats enable them to live in colder environments. They also have some fairly unique hooves that allow them to walk in snow and softer ground. In the autumn these hooves will grow sharp edges to help them break through ice when they need to search for food. Both males and females can grow antlers, which is not common in other members of the deer family.
