The beauty of science is in the detail. Sooo many people give me the "Yes, I've tried that and didn't see much change" when I suggest transdermal magnesium therapy. When you push for the actual process they followed, it tends to be patchy application of a squirt or two and the occasional footsoak for just a few weeks.
For some reason, tenacity is not something that often goes hand in hand with natural medicine.
As a wise man once said to me (thank you, Mike!) "You spent 25 years carefully creating this problem, you're probably not going to undo it completely in one month."
Soooo many people come to me asking questions about Magnesium Spray as a hair growth stimulant. Is it true? Oh yes. Studied, documented and plenty of anecdotes. If you follow the protocol and persist. What is Magnesium Spray? It's a super-saturated solution of Magnesium Chloride designed for topical use - sometimes called Magnesium Oil.
Can I regrow my thinning hair by using topical (transdermal) magnesium?
Firstly, let's be clear that the tendency towards hair loss, in both men and women, does SOMETIMES have a genetic basis. However we do not need to confuse a tendency with an inevitable outcome. Many people with genetic hair loss patterns ARE able to offset that by conscious intervention.
Most hair loss is triggered by inflammation, poor blood flow to the scalp and mineral deficiency, which are significantly increased by stress - both acute and chronic.
Why does stress suddenly trigger hair loss? Because our bodies use phenomenal amounts of magnesium during periods of stress, and prioritize the distribution of the remaining magnesium according to need. Heart rhythm is first, along with brain function and tissue repair in our vital organs. Not enough magnesium to do the job? Your body will "draw down" magnesium from bones and teeth and tissues like your scalp that are deemed less essential. Sleep quality suffers during stress, as we limp along with inadequate magnesium supply. Wounds on our extremities heal more slowly, we easily have accidents after bouts of intense or prolonged stress which result in bone fractures. And hair loss is common.
Magnesium is primarily a muscle relaxant. It improves circulation, resolves calcification (like kidney stones) and it vital for healthy hair, bones and teeth. It stabilizes heart rhythms, empowers a healthy sleep cycle and that, in turn, speeds wound healing. The improved cerebral blood flow in turn improves cognition and memory.
In terms of hair loss, magnesium improves the blood supply to, and nourishment of, the hair follicle itself.
A study that is often cited for proving that transdermal magnesium absorption offers a simple, cost effective and efficient methodology to increase cellular magnesium levels was a trial that took place over a 12-week period and involved a total of nine patients aged between 22 and 69 years (only weak statistical power). Following provision of a hair sample, although known to be only less representative for total body magnesium handling, for analysis of mineral content each patient tested was instructed to apply 20 sprays of magnesium oil. The original treatment consisted of the daily spray, anywhere on the body, as well as a 20-min foot soak using 100 mL magnesium oil (using a simple water footbath) twice weekly. At the end of 12-week treatment a further hair analysis was conducted. After transdermal applications for 12 weeks all patients except one had a significant increase in cellular magnesium ranging from −7.1% to 262%. One patient ceased application prematurely, three weeks before the final analysis. Overall an average increase of 59.7% in hair was observed. Source
Let me just repeat that study outcome: Overall an average increase of 59.7% in hair was observed.
So many producers or retailers of topical magnesium really don't appreciate the science of skin - that fundamentally it is there to PROTECT us from absorbing substances, and that any absorption occurs primarily through hair follicles and sweat glands. Just spraying it anywhere isn't ideal, or particularly effective.
A recently published study showed that magnesium ions can penetrate the stratum corneum in a concentration and time dependent manner which is significantly facilitated by hair follicles. However, hair follicles and sweat glands constitute only 0.1% to 1% of the skin surface. Source
Absorption of magnesium from different kinds of magnesium supplements varies. Forms of magnesium that dissolve well in liquid are more completely absorbed in the gut than less soluble forms [2,14]. Small studies have found that magnesium in the aspartate, citrate, lactate, and chloride forms is absorbed more completely and is more bioavailable than magnesium oxide and magnesium sulfate [14-18]. One study found that very high doses of zinc from supplements (142 mg/day) can interfere with magnesium absorption and disrupt the magnesium balance in the body [19]. Source
So What Does A 12 Week Magnesium Challenge Look Like?
For Hair Growth?
- Spray your scalp liberally with Magnesium Spray-Oil x3 per week, and leave on for 20 mins before washing your hair-scalp; inversion (head down below heart) is helpful for enhancing blood flow to the scalp.
- Soak your feet (maximum sweat glands) in Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom Salt) at least 20 mins, 3 times every week - preferably on the alternate days to your scalp treatment. One handful of epsom salt to a large basin of warm water.
- Spritz the soles of your clean feet liberally with magnesium chloride every night before sleep, and massage in using a natural plant-based oil.
You can have a hair analysis done before and after if you're really keen on tracking results. Take pictures of your scalp up close, and your nails (fingers and toes) - week 1 and week 12. And keep a diary. Record sleep patterns-hours, falling asleep, stress levels, muscle cramps, moods.
It DOES take time to redress systemic magnesium deficiency, and it does take more than an occasional squirt and a weekly soak. The results ARE amazing! Teeth can heal, as can bones and nails. Our hair? Yes, it can and does regrow if we persist and provide our body with what it needs.
