One of the interesting fringe benefits of having to sit in the car and wait somewhere — like the minor emergency parking lot at the local hospital, where I was this morning — is that you often end up paying attention to stuff you don't otherwise notice.
As I tapped out these words on my phone, Mrs. Denmarkguy was inside getting her hurt foot looked at, and due to Covid, "visitors" (including accompanying husbands) were not allowed in. So, I was relegated to the car.
So, I was sitting there, looking around at clouds moving by, leaves blowing in the wind, the creeper on the wall, and then I noticed this little sticker on the cell phone holder on the dash:
WARNING: cancer and reproductive harm.
It reminded me of the somewhat surreal world in which we live, where pretty much everything kills us, or is harmful or dangerous.
Of course these things always were harmful or dangerous, it's just that we have been conditioned to live in a constant state of worry and fear now.
And, of course, the ostensible "facts" seem to change every 30 minutes, adding a second layer of worry about whether or not the aforementioned "facts" are ACTUALLY facts, or just fabrications designed to sell us the latest iteration of anxiety meds.
Like you probably did, I drank water from the garden hose when I was a kid... and I am still alive! Even though doing so is evidently hazardous.
In the end, are we really any better off by knowing that everything is a hazard? I have my doubts. Every time I go to my doctor for a checkup, she goes into a long lecture about behaviors I "need to change" and shows me on some medical app how I could lengthen my expected lifespan.
My response is always the same: "That may be true, but would I ENJOY that longer life?"
My auntie — who was in good health when she passed away at 94 — lived by the wisdom of "all things in moderation." She lived by herself, had full mobility and enjoyed her life pretty much every day.
Seems to me that worked pretty well... Besides, next week they'll only discover that the precautions I took this week are actually dangerous!
Thanks for reading, and have a great rest of your week!
