When it comes to dishes my husband loves dishes with no oil. He said that it is much healthier when a dish has no oil. And one of his favorites with no oil is Blue Scad Mackerel in White Vinegar. This dish is straightforward yet delicious and healthy. It is also one of my favorites, I guess food is one of the binding mediums between me and my husband.
I eat a lot whenever I cook this dish, as my husband (he just loves the spicy soup). Cooking this dish is very easy, you just combine all the ingredients and then let them boil. This is the simplest version of this dish but it can be upgraded by adding more vegetables like eggplant, snow cabbage, and bitter gourd. Aside from white vinegar, any type of vinegar can be used in this dish.
IMPORTANT: The stomach and gills of the Blue Scad Mackerel must be completely removed. Not removing the stomach will make the soup bitter and not removing the gills will make the soup fishy and undesirable.
Ingredients
- Blue Scad Mackerel (medium, 5 pieces)
- Onion (small, 2 pc)
- Garlic (2 cloves, small)
- Green Pepper (2 pieces, medium)
- Black Ground Pepper
- White Vinegar
- Salt
Preparing the ingredients
I just peeled and sliced the garlic (in my experience red garlic is more aromatic than white garlic)

I washed the blue scad mackerel with water and I removed the stomach and gills
How to cook
1. I combined all the ingredients in a pan
2. I added some water
3. I added some white vinegar (adjust the sourness of the soup by adding more white vinegar)
4. I added some salt and let them boil
5. When the blue scad mackerel is cooked turn off the heat
6. Put some in a bowl and serve with rice
