During the week I promised my grandson we would visit a bakery and find a cake with the only problem the nearest bakery is a good 30 minute drive away. Supermarkets do not count as their offerings are sub standard so it has to be an independent and I only know of 3.
The first stop was De Molen which is a Dutch bakery in the photo above which has an eye catching wind mill and you cannot miss it. The only problem being a Saturday morning they were so busy and we may have been an hour too late with pies the only thing being in abundance.
The next stop was around the corner only being about a ten minute drive and again it was a miss as they had a ten minute queue just to get inside. I never knew visiting a bakery on a Saturday morning was a thing people do. Realizing quite quickly we were running out of options I knew the 3rd bakery would be the best option as they are a massive store and literally cater for thousands daily. That was another 20 minute drive and it was worth the drive. This is a Greek owned bakery that has been around for a few generations.
There seemed like less people here but that was misleading as the bakery was very busy, but like I said is much bigger so they have a bigger selection. You must never go shopping when you are hungry and have learned you feed the family first and you will actually save money. I forgot this very important point this morning and bought them lunch.
Those funny white things above the cakes spin around and keep the bees and flies away. The beauty about a busy bakery is everything is fresh and whilst customers are buying the stock more are being made continuously all day. This is a brilliant business and you have to wonder why I have to drive 30 minutes to find a bakery.
This is a Greek bakery so you will find some Greek delicacies mixed in with the normal stuff. We found a cake for my grandson and what I find quite sweet with him is he asked if he could get a cake for his parents and sister. Always thinking of others is a good characteristic which is rare in kids his age.
We grabbed some toasted sandwiches from the food counter which we took home for lunch which again was not part of the plan, but may as well when you are already out.
I managed to grab some biltong which is a dried cured meat similar to beef jerky, but in my opinion much better. Most SA homes will have biltong to nibble over the weekends especially when sport is on.
At least I know now if we need to do this again then I skip the first two options and hit the Greek bakery as at least I am not wasting my time.
