Hello everyone! As part of my summer vacation, I was traveling in the Baltic Sea and visited the Scandinavian and Baltic countries. This was my first time on Gotland, an island that belongs to Sweden and lies to the south-east. I was only in Visby, the largest city on the island, and as a tourist there is a lot to see and many places to visit. But what particularly surprised me was the “Glassmagasinet” ice cream shop there. With over 300 different types of ice cream, it is the largest ice cream shop in Europe! 🍦
That was reason enough for me to visit this ice cream shop and, of course, to try an ice cream there. I also took a few photos and would like to share my insights into “Glassmagasinet” with you. Have fun reading! 😊
Visby is actually known for its well-preserved city wall, which surrounds the entire old town. Of course, I had to see it and took a walk along it. The Domkirche, which I also visited, is also well-known. It's also worth mentioning that there are many medieval church ruins within Visby, some of which you can even enter.
But now to the “Glassmagasinet” ice cream shop. It is located almost directly on the harbor of Visby and you have a good view of the sea from there. From the outside, you can immediately see that the ice cream shop is located in two adjacent buildings. It makes sense, as the many different types of ice cream require a lot of space. A look inside shows that many tourists visit the ice cream parlor and there is a lot going on. But that wasn't bad at all, as there were also lots of sellers behind the ice cream counters.
The selection of ice cream flavors definitely overwhelmed me. In the first building there were probably eight of these boxes, each of which contained around 20 types of ice cream. And in the second building, there must have been another five of these boxes with all the different types of ice cream you can imagine. From normal chocolate to Dom Perignon champagne. Ordering was not so easy...
The menu with the prices is actually not entirely in English, which surprised me a little. Especially because so many international tourists visit the ice cream shop. Nevertheless, with a little knowledge of the language, you can imagine how much you will pay for your ice cream. A single ice cream ball would cost 50 Swedish Crowns, which is about €4.50. This is very expensive even by German standards, but the price per ball of ice cream gets cheaper if you order more.
After looking at all the available ice cream flavors and being completely overwhelmed, I finally managed to order my ice cream. I opted for two balls, namely Kinder Schokolade and Cookie. When the ice cream was put into the cup, I noticed that the individual balls were very large. That's definitely a plus point. But I also thought my ice cream tasted really good and my fellow holidaymakers who were in the ice cream shop with me were also impressed by their ice cream. 😋
If someone had asked me where the largest ice cream shop in Europe was before I came to Gotland, I would probably never have known. All due respect to Gotland and Visby, but I would never have guessed that it was in such a small town and in Northern Europe. I would have guessed one of the big Italian cities. Nevertheless, I found it a cool experience to have been there and the ice cream was, as I said, very tasty. Nevertheless, in future I'll be happy with ice cream shops that offer a slightly smaller selection. That definitely makes the choice easier.

Hallo zusammen! Im Rahmen meines Sommerurlaubs war ich in der Ostsee unterwegs und habe die skandinavischen und baltischen Länder bereist. Hierbei war ich zum ersten Mal auf Gotland, eine Insel die zu Schweden gehört und südöstlich davon liegt. Ich befand mich lediglich in Visby, der größten Stadt der Insel, und dort gibt es als Tourist viel zu sehen und viele Orte zu bereisen. Was mich aber besonders überrascht hat ist die dortige Eisdiele "Glassmagasinet". Denn mit über 300 verschiedenen Eissorten ist es die größte Eisdiele Europas! 🍦
Das war mich für natürlich Grund genug, um diese Eisdiele zu besuchen und dort selbstverständlich auch ein Eis zu sehen. Dabei habe ich auch das ein oder andere Foto geschossen und ich möchte meine Einblicke zu "Glassmagasinet" mit euch teilen. Viel Spaß beim Lesen! 😊
Eigentlich ist Visby unter anderem für die gut erhaltene Stadtmauer bekannt, die einmal die komplette Altstadt umschließt. Die musste ich mir natürlich ansehen und bin auch ein bisschen entlang spaziert. Außerdem bekannt ist die Domkirche, die ich ebenfalls besichtigt habe. Und erwähnenswert ist noch, dass innerhalb von Visby viele mittelalterliche Ruinen von Kirchen stehen, die man teilweise sogar betreten kann.
Nun aber zur Eisdiele “Glassmagasinet”. Sie befindet sich quasi direkt am Hafen von Visby und man hat von dort einen guten Blick aufs Meer. Von außen sieht man direkt, dass sich die Eisdiele in zwei nebeneinander liegenden Gebäuden befindet. Ist ja irgendwo logisch, die vielen verschiedenen Eissorten benötigen ja auch viel Platz. Ein Blick nach innen zeigt, dass viele Touristen die Eisdiele besuchen und eine Menge los ist. Aber das war gar nicht schlimm, da auch viele Verkäufer hinter den Eistheken standen.
Die Auswahl der Eissorten hat mich auf jeden Fall überfordert. Im ersten Gebäude befanden sich bestimmt acht dieser Kästen, wovon jeder ca. 20 Eissorten beinhaltete. Und auch im zweiten Gebäude standen bestimmt noch mal fünf dieser Kästen mit den verschiedensten Eissorten, die man sich nur so vorstellen kann. Von normaler Schokolade bis hin zu Dom Perignon Champagner. Da fiel das Bestellen gar nicht so einfach...
Die Karte mit den Preisen ist tatsächlich nicht vollständig auf Englisch, was mich doch etwas überrascht hat. Vor allem weil ja so viele internationale Touristen die Eisdiele besuchen. Trotzdem kann man sich mit ein bisschen Sprachkenntnis vorstellen, wie viel man für sein Eis zahlt. Eine einzelne Kugel würde 50 Schwedische Kronen kosten, was ungefähr 4,50€ entspricht. Das ist selbst für deutsche Verhältnisse sehr teuer, jedoch wird der Preis pro Eiskugel billiger, wenn man mehre davon bestellt.
Nachdem ich mir alle verfügbaren Eissorten einmal angesehen habe und ich vollends überfordert war, habe ich es dann doch irgendwann geschafft mein Eis zu bestellen. Ich habe mich dabei für zwei Kugeln entschieden, und zwar Kinderschokolade und Cookie. Als das Eis in den Becher getan wurde habe ich schon gesehen, dass die einzelnen Kugeln sehr groß gemacht werden. Das gibt auf jeden Fall einen Pluspunkt. Aber auch geschmacklich fand ich mein Eis wirklich gut und meine Miturlauber, die mit mir in der Eisdiele waren, waren von ihrem Eis auch überzeugt. 😋
Wenn man mich vor meinem Aufenthalt auf Gotland gefragt hätte, wo sich die größte Eisdiele Europas befindet, wäre ich vermutlich niemals draufgekommen. Allen Respekt Gotland und Visby gegenüber, aber ich hätte nie gedacht, dass sie sich in so einer kleinen Stadt und dann auch noch in Nordeuropa befindet. Ich hätte eher auf eine der großen italienischen Städte getippt. Nichts desto trotz fand ich es eine coole Erfahrung dort gewesen zu sein und das Eis war, wie gesagt, sehr lecker. Trotzdem gebe ich mich in Zukunft auch mit Eisdielen zufrieden, die eine etwas kleinere Auswahl bieten. Da fällt die Wahl auf jeden Fall schon mal leichter.
